New AC Delco oil filter for the CV

The AC Delco PF454 is a substitute for the OEM PF25 oil filter. This
filter is advantageous because it has an anti-drainback valve, which
will prevent oil from draining back into the sump. This will provide
both more accurate dipstick readings and reduce the time required to
achieve oil pressure on a cold start. The PF25 does not have an
anti-drainback valve.

The PF 454 is also shorter, so it will work with oil cooler adapters
on the filter pad. The PF25 has insufficient steering gear clearance
with most oil cooler adapters.

You can check www.acdelco.com and view comparative pictures that
clearly show the difference in height. The site shows over 75 pages
of applications since it will fit all PF 25 installations, which are
very common. The PF 454 was OEM on the LT1 engines (B, F, and Y body
for example) from the early to late ninties, and it has many other
primary applications.

P.S. Mike R - you might want to include this as a TB in the next
magazine

New AC Delco oil filter for the CV

Duke,

My '94 LT1 Corvette uses the smaller PF52 filter, not the PF25.

Also, when I searched by PF454 applications, '75 and '76 Cosworth
Vega with 122ci engines were not listed, though the 140ci was listed
in '75. I suppose this is just an online catalog error, right,
because the filters are the same? Also, I noticed the Oil Fill Cap
was incorrect.

Where specifically on the site did you find your info and pictures?

Ken

Further research indicates that the PF 454 may be new in the last two
or three years with a primary application of 8.1L gasoline medium duty
trucks. If you specify a late model medium duty truck as the vehicle
and ask for "filters" it should show the PF454. Then click on "PF454"
and it should give you a picture. You can do the same for the PF25 to
get a visual comparison of height. There is a function in the site to
type in the part number and it will give you all the applications. In
the case of the PF 25, 35, 454 there are over 75 pages of
applications, but obviously they missed a few. The Vega and CV were
OEM with the PF25, which was almost universally used on SBs from the
late sixties to the late eighties. It's one of the most widely used
filters in the industry. The PF 454 has the same base configuration
and thread, but has the anti-drain back valve. That's why essentially
all PF25 applications are also listed as PF454 applications as they
are functionally interchangeable.

There is also a PF454F and PF454S, but nothing on the site to
distiguish them. I wrote AC Delco and e-mail asking for the
differences.

Got a response from AC Delco on my e-mail query regarding the suffix
letters on the PF454 oil filter. They relate to order quantities -
"F" is for a pallet and "S" is for a six-pack.
