Jeremy:

When you pull the front cover off, set the engine to TDC/0 degrees
on the timing tab. Make sure the distributor rotor is pointing to
the #1 plug wire contact, and is not 180 degrees off.

Next, remove the hood. This is by far the easiest way, though you
don't actually need to. Cramming your face into the area, or using
a large mirror works too. Then observe the marks on the cam
sprockets. The dots should be next to one another. The dashes
should be at the 90 (intake) and 30 (exhaust) positons. All
dashes and dots should be in a horizontal line. If not, then the
cam belt jumped at least one tooth on at least one sprocket.

Also verify that the dash on the intake distributor drive sprocket
is aligned with the dash on the distributor drive gear. If all the
dots and dashes are in their correct positions, then it is back to
the drawing board.

The bottom of the timing cover tends to jam up on the damper when you
try to remove it, so I always remove the damper first. It's a slip
fit, so you just loosen the alternator and remove the belt, then
remove the center and four peripheral bolts from the damper and slip
it off. Remove the timing cover and then reinstall the damper with a
couple of the peripheral bolts to insure the timing mark is line up
with the zero point of the timing tab. You can make small adjustments
by just bumping the car in fourth gear to get them spot on.
