When you pull the front cover off, set the engine to TDC/0 degrees
on the timing tab. Make sure the distributor rotor is pointing to
the #1 plug wire contact, and is not 180 degrees off.
Next, remove the hood. This is by far the easiest way, though you
don't actually need to. Cramming your face into the area, or using
a large mirror works too. Then observe the marks on the cam
sprockets. The dots should be next to one another. The dashes
should be at the 90 (intake) and 30 (exhaust) positons. All
dashes and dots should be in a horizontal line. If not, then the
cam belt jumped at least one tooth on at least one sprocket.
Also verify that the dash on the intake distributor drive sprocket
is aligned with the dash on the distributor drive gear. If all the
dots and dashes are in their correct positions, then it is back to
the drawing board.
