I always use a coat hanger to find TDC/BDC. Commonly available and
long enough not to fall irretrievably in.

I haven't seen anything but plastic coat hangers for years. I have a
long piece of 1/4" dowel rod I'll use. Once I get TDC I can fashion a
new timing tab, mark TDC and layout marks past 12 BTDC.

I picked up a spare engine, but it's missing the lower cover.

Speaking of covers, on page 14 of the engine assembly guide, the
diagram show item 1 as lower-front and item 2 as lower-rear. This
seems backwards.
