Carpet solution for 1976

I have been searching the archives, and saw the post on the
cosworthvega.com site about the caution on ordering the carpet for
the '76 Cosworth. Has anyone out there ordered carpet for their '76
and had it fit correctly? If so, was it ordered under the '76
Cosworth carpet, or the '75 - '80 Monza carpet? I am going to replace
the carpet, front and back, in my orange/buckskin car. What is the
best manufacturer to go to for this. I want to make sure that what I
order is going to fit. I have seen carpets in "Auto custom carpets",
online at "www.1aautomotive.com", and have also seen the listing for
the vendor that is listed in the CVOA magazine. What make and model
do I order for, and who from. Looking for best fit and color. Is it a
general rule that most '76's with the buckskin interior has the dark
saddle carpet in it, or the buckskin color carpet? Please share your
experiences with me in this matter.
Thanks,
Mike Bormann #2874

Mike:

We found the carpet tag in #3387 under the right rear corner of the
carpet. We had to lift the passenger rear seat botton to lift up
that corner of the carpeting. You can see a blurry image of the tag
still affixed to the carpet at the www.cosworthvega.com Site. It is
in the Photo Gallery under the Interiors button.

We compared our carpet color with that in Tom Lippert's #3449, and
they appear to be the same. I can't speak for other cars. If you
want to be original, find the carpet tag on your existing carpet,
order the same color, and affix the old tag to the new carpet.

Most carpet companies will send you swatches of their colors so you
can make the best color match.

Mark

Mike,

1976 Vega/cosworths had the "split" rear seat cushions so you must
get the '76-77 vega carpet that extends to the rear steel panel of
the axle tunnel. The '75 Cosworth used the '75 monza floor pan so
a '75 monza carpet is the one to use plus the '75 rear seat was
a "full" seat cushion so it covers the driveshaft hump. Therefore,
the '75 carpet is shorter by about 2 feet and it won't work in a '76.

Carpet solution for 1976

I have been very happy with the carpets from ACC. I did have a
problem at first with ACC since they used to use the same carpet for
the 75 and 76 Cosworth and it was the 75 version. When I ordered one
for a 76 it was too short. I had a long talk with them about it back
then many years ago. Last year I ordered a 76 carpet and it fit
great so it appears they have corrected the problem and they do show
2 different part numbers now. As for the buckskin interior, that is
not my expertise as most of my cars are black, however I recently
ordered a new rear cargo area carpet for 3509. It has buckskin
interior and I am under the impression that the correct carpet color
is called saddle. ACC told me that they don't have a listing for
saddle but they do have one for buckskin and that is the only one
close to that shade of brown. I got it in the other day but I havn't
been able to compare it yet since I have already sold the car. I did
look at it and it appears to be the right color. I hope that helps,
Chris

Chris, out of curiosity, how many cars did you buy and sell this year?

Would you take one in consignment?

Carpet solution for 1976

All,

I did order samples from 2 companies. ACC was one of them.
DK saddle matched the carpet best in areas under the seat on #3387,
where the sun did not have the opportunity to fade it. Buckskin
looked completely wrong, and very butterscotch like. The tag on the
factory carpet read "DK Saddle".

Tom's Lippert's carpet looked just like ours. His also had the
factory tag. The tag is located under the carpet under the passenger
rear seat near the tunnel which read "DK Saddle". You can view it
quickly and easily by removing the seat bottom (NO tools required!)
and lifting up on the carpet. This is also an excellent place to
view the true color of the carpet (after a quick vacuum).

As someone may have stated, the Dark Saddle matches the dark brown
trim pieces on the vents and the dash. Don't let any company say you
cannot return a pooly fitting carpet made in DK Saddle because it is
a "custom" color - it is not. If anything, Buckskin would be custom!

As an aside note, I ordered other color samples also. And to me, the
most pleaseing ones were in the doeskin family, FWIW.

As for fitment - I have yet to see an new carpet fit into a 76 that
was correct, so I will not comment on this issue.

Ken

I'll have to do it comes spring, the reason why I hesitate so much
is because of where I live, but if I don't try I won't know.

Plus there's always one person that seems like a potential buyer
here, at least one or two every year and it always turn out to be a
waste of my time.

Next spring I won't let a bozo get in the way, I will take the
pictures and do it.

I will contact you once I get all the pictures done.

I still think if I can't move it from here, I might have to take it
back down to the States, that's why I'm always on your case, sorry
to be such a pain it the a$$.

I'll give eBay a try, never done it, but I should be able to figure
it out.

I am not sure how many Cosworths I picked up this year. I don't go
looking for them, they find me. I probably picked up 3 or 4
Cosworths and 1 wagon this year. I sold one early hatchback to a
friend and then 3509. I usually only buy run down parts cars
destined for the junk yard or cars that have just been sitting for 10
plus years. Byron really needed the money and I bought the car to
help him out more than anything. A guy that had been looking at the
car previously decided he wanted it after all. I was thinking about
doing a couple of finishing touches to it and putting it on Ebay
which is what I recommended Byron do many times. I still think that
you should do that with yours if you really want to sell it. Just
take lots of pictures and give good detail in your ad. It was funny
to me that Byron kept saying for years that he wanted to sell the car
and I kept telling him to put it on Ebay but he never did. I think
the car would have gone for at least $6,000. Instead he took it to
some other guys who took all these pictures and listed it for $9950.
All Byron wanted for the car was $5000. Then I told him someone
would be interesting in trading up and he should work a deal with
him, I told him what to say and all he did was call the guy and see
if he wanted to buy it. Then he gave up. Had he done what I
suggested, the guy told me that he probably would have done it. I
guess the bottom line is, it is funny to me that some guys say that
they want to sell the car so bad but they don't do the obvious to get
it done. If you really want to sell your car, put it on Ebay. If
that doesn't work, send me a bunch of pictures and details on the car
and I will see what I can do. But try it on Ebay first. Chris
