Duke has written an extraordinary piece in the TCT Portfolio on this
issue and on the T-50 in general. I have compiled the Yahoo postings
on this issue in my Cosworth Vega Tips and Tricks Knowledge Base
books. The issue has also been addressed in the Cosworth Vega
magazine. An index, created by Brian Harpst, is available on the
www.cosworthvega.com website. I encourage you to read each and all.
Succinctly, first gear tends to seize to the mainshaft at high
RPM's. With predictable catastrophic results.
CVOA Member/Director/Machinist Roy Linenberger will modify your
transmission by installing a bronze bushing in first gear with the
proper/needed clearances, and make other mods as needed, for a
reasonable fee. He is doing one for me now. It is cheap insurance.
Alterntively, you can install a 77-up T-50. These transmissions were
extensively redesigned, as Duke's article explains.
Cheaper insurance, but not as comprehensive, is to remove the trans
fluid and replace it with Redline MTL till it starts running out of
the fill hole. It is added protection, but not a complete solution.
