Brian,

I would use any sort of grommet that would fit. It is for vibration
isolation. You wouldn't want engine/trans vibration reverberating
thru the chassis if the shift was mounted solid (unless you like that
racecar feel!)

You could get into different durometers and materials for the
grommets but for what reason. I would just want it not to buzz and
rattle.

ps: the stock four-speed linkage is such a "precision" piece but it
was a lot better than the "school bus" long throw shifter in the 71-
72 Vega 4 speeds.
