I searched the archives and couldn't find anything that address the
factory speakers. My car has the original AM radio in it, that has
not worked since I've had the car. I purchased an AM/FM 8 track off
of ebay that listed that they did not know if it worked or not, so I
got it for a good deal. I pulled the AM radio out, and hooked up the
8 trach radio. That's where my first problem started. Only 2 of the 3
connections fit. The power connection, and the front speaker hook up
worked fine, however, the rear speaker plug was different.
But putting that aside, after I hooked up the power and front
speaker, this radio didn't work either. I then decided to test the
factory speakers, and sure enough, neither front or rear speaker
worked. So I hooked up a newer speaker to my old radio, and to the
new AM FM 8 track, and both radio's worked fine, even the 8 track
that I tested with an 8 track I picked up at the thrift store. So now
I have 2 working radio's, and no speakers.
My question is, has anyone ever replaced the speakers with
aftermarket? If so, what did you buy? With the way that the front
speaker mounts to the underside of the dash, I don't see how you
could replace it with anything but an OEM. I have yet to pull the
rear speaker out to see how that mounts.
If an aftermarket is not able to go into the factory spot, does
anyone have a front and rear OEM speaker that they want to sell?
Also, the 8 track radio is much thicker than the stock AM, and
requires a narrower, or thinner, mounting bracket. The mounting
bracket I have has an "AM" stamped on it. So I am assuming there is a
different one for the 8 track player. Does anyone have one of those
they want to sell as well?
Can I buy a plug somewhere for the rear speaker hook up out og the
back of the 8 track?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike, since there were only a few CVs with the 8 track option, and
probably very few Vegas, you will probably have to make a bracket. Go
to radio shack to get your speakers. They sell single speakers and in
the correct impedence. You need 16 ohm coils in the speakers if you
want a direct replacement. There are ways to wire it so you could
have two speakers up front, but you won't end up with a "stereo"
sound anyways, so I'd just stay with one. They are 4"x10". The are
real cheap at Radio Shack too,

Britt

Can someone tell me what size of speaker comes stock in the back
panel of a '76 Cosworth? 4x10, 4x6, 5x7 or 6x9?
Thanks,
Mike

I'd be willing to bet they're 4"x10"

One of the easiest speaker fixes that i have found is to remove the
old paper cone, keeping the magnet and bracket in place. Then cut an
opening on the frame of the speaker on both sides of the magnet with
tin snips to accept a pair of 3 or 4 inch 10 ohm speakers and attach
with rivets or screws. Replace the cloth speaker cover. (see Photos,
Vega Speaker) You can also rework the rear speaker using the same
idea, it is just mounted differently. You get the 4 speakers for a
stereo set up. Not the best quality for sound acousticly but it does
keep the interior original looking and will sound much better than
what was there.

Mike

I also believe they are 4 x 10's.

The fronts and the backs are identical.

The backs are mounted by four pins that go through the corner holes
and are held in place by nuts and lock washers. The pins are on the
speaker grille.

The front and back speakers are 10 ohm, not 16.

Replacement speakers can be held in place by turning the front
bracket upside down and screwing it in place. The big magnet, and
the wedging effect, are sufficient to keep the front speaker firmly
in position. That is what I did.

The new Radio Shack speakers sound MUCH better than the original
speakers. However, they are only 8 ohm speakers. I don't use my
car/radio much, and the 8 ohm units work fine. I'd be concerned
about 4 ohm speakers, and would probably use a resistor to protect
the radio.
