Everyone:

Roy and I just received this message from Dave Depmsey about the "RL
Special" cam sprockets (cam sprockets reindexed to specifications
developed by Duke Williams) that he installed on his car:

"All that I can say is NICE!!

I got my Cosworth back together and running with the re-indexed cam
gears installed. I almost got the idle were I want it. I just need to
fine tune the MAP sensor and ECU to my liking. As far as I can tell
the re-indexed cam gears are all that Duke said they are.

A big thanks out to you and Roy for doing an outstanding job on this
project.

Take Care,

David Dempsey"

It's always nice to get positive feedback. Check out the sprockets
at www.cosworthparts.com

Re-indexed Cam Sprockets Redux

My current recommendation is MAP sensor at OEM position, ECU idle pot
full rich (turned all the way to the "R" limit.)

My initial timing is at about 12-13 degrees and the Delco D-1356
vacuum advance is locked at 11 degrees at idle since it's fully
deployed at less than idle vacuum (spec is maximum of 10 degrees at
8"), so total idle timing is about 23-24 degrees and the tops of the
header measure about 500F with a IR gun. My current idle speed is
<a href="/group/cosworthvegas/post?protectID=021215254003067095">900@1...</a>", and it is dead stable and butter smooth.

As stated earlier my NOx emissions doubled, but are still only about
half the standard for CA emission testing.

I had some initial concerns about detonation due to higher dynamic
compression because of the less overlap (but somewhat offset by the
later closing inlet valve), but they were unfounded. My centrifugal
starts just above idle speed at about 1000 and is all in by 2200 with
total WOT (initial plus total centrifugal) timing of 32 degrees. I
set the timing at 32 with the vacuum can disconnected and the engine
revving over 2500, and let the initial fall wherever it will. My
distributor appears to have a bit more than the 17 degrees OEM spec,
so at 32 total the initial ends up at about 12-13.
