Hello,

I have a 1975 Cosworth and the door pull on the driver side has
pulled away from the upper bracket. I can remember this being a
problem with other Vega's and Monza's I had, but I need some advise
on how to repair this.

Has anyone run into this problem? What is the repair, a new panel?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob 0126

Door Pulls

Bob:

If I understand your problem correctly, the armrest/door pull has
come loose. If this is your problem, then I can share my experiences.

There are three long Phillips screws that hold the door pull in
place. Two are underneath the main body, and one is in the front
tip. Normally the plastic insert in the front tip of the door pull
itself breaks and allows the plastic/vinyl part to pull away from the
door, leaving the screw and a small piece of plastic still tightly
affixed to the door panel. The plastic piece is molded in place, and
unless you can find a glue that will work great (I haven't), the only
solution is to replace the pull entirely (and not yank on it so hard
in the future).

I suspect it is possible that the screw stripped the threads out of
the sheet metal piece it screws into, and if so the solution is to
remove the door panel, then the sheet metal piece, repair the hole
the screw threads into, then replace everything.

I can probably dig up a picture of the inside of the door with this
sheet metal piece in place if that would help.

Any further questions, or clarifications of your problem, let us know.

Mark

Same thing happened on my white interior. I used some kind of glue
to attach a big fender type washer on the panel side. Then I put
the original screw in. It's not the best engineering, but it holds
and looks better. Now I pull my door closed by either grabbing the
big arm rest or the part of handle very close to arm rest.

There is a common problem with Vega armrests that the top screw pulls
out since the plastic piece inside the armrest comes out. It is a
simple fix. Help parts makes an armrest repair kit. Most auto parts
stores should have them. They are the ones in the red packages. The
part # for the repair kit is 49251. It consists of one new screw
with a slightly smaller diameter head, a sleave and a set screw. It
is a simple fix and only takes a minute. Remove the other 2 screws
that hold the armrest in place. Install the sleeve in the top hole
so that the openings are flush. Carefully drill the hole for the set
screw but make sure you don't drill through the armrest. Install the
set screw and you are ready to put it back on. Just remember to use
the new screw since the stock ones are a little bit larger diameter
and you are ready to go. Stronger than new. Take care, Chris

I have a couple of the Help kits, but have yet to use them. I've
managed to repair the plastic bushing with Super Glue, just a month
ago for the second time. So far it's holding.

Since the Help kit results in a visible screw, I'm going to keep super
gluing the bushing back together until it's no longer an option.
