Hello everyone, I think I saw here last week that
someone has a TH 700-r4 in their h-body. I wanted to know
how hard it was to put in. Our turbo engine and ecm
is made for a 200-4r, but i was wondering if a 700
is a better fit?. Also had the sunbird out of the
garage last night for the first time in a year the 3.42
posi really helped. It hooks good (for now) we'll see
what more boost and a looser convertor will do about
that.
Thanks Jay

I put a 700R-4 into my 71 Vega about 6 months
age. Great for agas mileage but not exactly a great
fit. I had to replace quite a bit of flooring to get
it up under there. I'm not sure of the clearance on
the "newer" models though. It is wider farther back
than the 350 or 250(?) turbos. If you have a PAW "Big
Book" on page 1000 there is a pretty good trans size
difference chart you might glance at. However, it doesn't
give the width farther back on the trans. I would
suggest measuring othe on in your car and the clearances
around and then measuring for yourself a 700. How I have
mine mounted is with the rear trans mount from the
Hooker v-8 vega kit. Good luck and let me know if I can
be of any further
assistance.

on my 1978 spyder i`m using a th-700 trans
i
had to shorten the drive shaft, the torque arm
i
had to do a crossmember
for the torque arm
mounting on the trans i used the the th-350 monza tail
housing to do so you`ll have to cut the trans output
shaft(about 1 1/4 inch) there`s a groove in the good
location
i had to hammer to floorpan to have space around
the trans
it`s tough to fir the trans in the
tunnel but it`s well worth the effort(low first
gear+overdrive)
be aware that a stock th-700 will handle medium hp
engines but for big numbers you should have a good trans
shop rebuilt and modified the trans to handle more
power (th-700 trans in modified form handles very well
up to 450 pounds of torque beyond that you have to
give the ma bit of respect
if any of you have
questions on things i might forgot just e-mail me

Borge Warner's T-5 and T-50s were/are 5 speed
trans. installed numberous GM products. T-50s in the
Vegas would often fail. The T-5, I think, came along a
little later in several GM products. I'm Looking for a 5
speed trans.

T50's came in the Hbodies and T5's first came out
in the 3rd gneration F-bodies, I think in '85. The
T50's were the biggest pieces of junk out there and
came with a funky shift pattern (1st was to the left
and back). I suggest not using a T50 except for maybe
a boat anchor.

The T-50 uses the proven Porsche '901' shift
pattern. This road race style pattern keeps first and
reverse out of the 'H' pattern to promote faster shifts
and less chance of a missed gear.

The biggest
problem with reliability on the T-50 was the use of ATF
as a lubricant. The same can be said for the T5.
Most shops I know are using Mobil 1 75/90 in all the
T5's they are working on.

Remember, you can
break anything. I still have a M-22 Fine Spline under
the bench you can reach into after we sheared the
counter gear.

Please ship all T-50's to my
address...Robert

yeah, and if you cant ship those t50's to robert
all the way out in california, ship them to me in
texas!!

in scca roadracing we ran a camaro with a t5 and ran
mobil 1 5w30 in it all the time, and never had a
problem. i am setting up a t50 now and will probably run
the same thing. i helped a vega friend a lot with his
vega and he ran a t50 behind a 215 alum olds motor
(v8) with very few problems...

i run mobil 1
5w30 in my monza now (t5) and it has been great...
