Engine temp and racing

Our Monza was running mid 12's around Sept. One
Friday night it was 80+ out and the car was running
12.7. I opened the hood and I could not touch the 14x3
CHROME air filter. The car was only running 180,I
removed the filter and the fuel bowls where hot as well.
I iced the fuel line and bowls down, leaving the
filter off Kelly's next pass was 12.3. With the low
hoodline and dropped base airfilter the heat was just
soaking into the CHROME and carb. For serious racing we
should remove the mech. fuel pump and sub an electric
pump with a return line so cooler fuel is always
getting to the fuel bowls.

Engine temp and racing

I think the temperature issue is kind of a mixed
bag. Idealy is what you want is a warm engine and a
cool intake charge. Unfortunately on these engines it
is difficult to attain both so we compromise by
trying to get the engine and underhood temp lower. With
coolant circulating through the intake it is going to
heat it up. Some of the new Edelbrock manifolds
attempt to seperate the intake runners from the rest of
the manifold to try to cool the runners. Having a
engine operate at 200 degrees or so is probably not a
major concern but we try to get them to run lower to
have some cushion for ambient temperature. I definetly
see a difference between running the car on a cool
day vs a 95 degree day so I try to build my cooling
system for the worst poosible scenario. Usually it runs
pretty cool at about 180 or so and the highest it will
get is about 210 idling on a very hot day. I would
like it to always run like it does when it is cool out
but it is acceptable the way it is. Clyde
