Which way do factory exhaust gaskets go on?
The metal side to the exhaust manifold and the regular side to the cyl. head?

exhaust gasket question

I don't know what the "correct" way is, but I
always put the metal side on the manifold side. I find
it easier to scrape the gasket off of the head than
the the manifold. I am willing to bet that others
like doing it the opposite way. Oh well, just my two
cents.

I'M NOT SURE WHICH WAY THEY GO,BUT WHEN YOU PUT THEM ON COAT BOTH SIDES WITH ANTI-SIEZE AND YOU WON'T HAVE TO SCRAPE THEM OFF.

exhaust gasket question

Well, OEm doesn't use gaskets in most cases,
relying on flat surfaces and carbon sealing, and I prefer
copper, aluminum, or MLS (multi-layer-steel) gaskets.
Race teams use just hi-temp RTV, and I have used it
begrudgingly with great sucess, still not understanding how
RUBBER can stand such heat... Oh, well...

ACTUALLY, thats the way you are supposed to do it
because the steel back would eat into the head and ruin
the sealing survace.
But I for one havent used
gaskets on manifolds or headers since i started using DAP
Dow Corning 50 yr clear silicone now Titanium
Enriched on anything i run except cars with o2
sensors.
It works perfect and I never have had a leak unless
i broke the seal and didnt put on anymore.
Good
Luck

PS at Bender Lumber here I can buy it for 5.00 a
tube and caulk gun for 2.00 .
