I know this isn't exactly h-body related but it
is engine related which in a way could be h-body
related, so read on if you like.

Well, the story
goes somewhat like this:

I had been looking for
a new engine (350ci) for my truck (76 chevy). A
friend told me he was taking the old 350 out of his
blazer and would sell it to me for $225. I thought to
myself "wow, what a great deal". But, ya know how the
old saying goes: "if it sounds too good to be true,
it probably is". Well, that's how it was with this
engine.

Anyway, I spend three days and about $150
in gaskets and misc. parts I needed for it to get it
into the truck and driving. After all was hooked up
and double checked I took the ol' girl for a test run
with open headers (country backroads). Thought I heard
a knock, but dismissed it as an exhaust leak;
thinking the header bolts came loose.

Took the
truck over to a friends house, like I said I would, for
a little four wheeling behind his house. Went down
a trail, turned around, came back down the trail
and parked (didn't even take 15 minutes for all of
this).

Decided I should go home and put the
exhaust back on it, so I did. Got all the bolts tightened
nice and snug. Took it for another test run, and to
fill up with gas. Noticed the "exhaust leak" hadn't
gone away. So I drove like a 90 yr-old lady home and
asked my father to come for a ride with me and listen.
He did and told me that I had an engine knock.

When I bought the engine my friend and his father told
me it needed bearings, but I figured I could get
away with at least a couple months of driving before
anything went bad. I heard the engine running the day it
got pulled and didn't hear a knock at all, so I don't
know what happened between then and now. Guess I
should've listened to the advice my friend and his father
gave me.

But, it was all worth it. Made me
really happy to have my 'Black Bomber' running and
driving. BTW, I'm only 16 and installed the engine on my
own, only time I had help was lining up the engine to
the tranny. Also, it really made me happy when my dad
told me he was proud that I did it all by myself with
very minimal help.

So, whenever you buy
something from somebody and they say it needs something,
listen to them.

Just wanted to let everybody know
about an experience I had.

Charlie

Charlie:
Good work getting everything going
and all. Theres nothing like firing up and engine for
the first time. The next time you are rebuilding an
engine try PAW (performance automotive warehouse) it is
a mail order company that specializes in just
engine parts. i just got a 1973 chevy 350, that needed a
rebuild. for $126 including shipping i got: new main and
rod bearings, a high volume oil pump, a double roller
timing chain, new piston rings, head gaskets, and a
complete engine gasket set. its a bargain...
i think
the catalog was like $5 but its thick as the yellow
pages! their website
is:
www.pawengineparts.com

take care drive safe

Good job, to bad the motor was bad. As for parts:

you can get an engine rebuild kit with everything for
a 350 small block chevy, including pistons, rings,
cam, lifters, rod, main, cam bearings, timing chain,
oil pump, gaskets. Pretty much everything you need to
rebuild any motor for 159.00 for a sb chevy

Charlie, If the truck is an automatic, double
check the bolts from the crank to the flexplate and the
flex plate to the torque converter. Sometimes a loose
bolt or two will sound like a bad bearing. I have seen
it happen a few times.

AJ,

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out
later on today. Would a loose bolt sound like a bad
bearing all the time? or just once in a while (which is
what mine is doing). It wont make the sound at idle,
WOT, or partial throttle... only does it when above
about 2200rpm's and the gas pedal pressed down about
1.5 - 3 inches.

Charlie, it all depends on how loose and what's loose. If it's really that at all.

Just giving ideas,

AJ

on my firebird the bolts that held the tranny to
the motor came loose and when you jumped on it you
could hear the 2 clunking together, guess the thing
didn't like the shiftkit or something ps check the easy
stuff first.

Lesson well learned, man. You plugged that bullet
in by your self, way to go.You'll probably learn who
your real friends are when your ride is down and no
one is around to help. The guys, and especially the
gals who come over to help(w/o the beer enticement)
and get dirty, are your real Buds.Plenty of
assistance here w/ any ???'s you have to get your ride back
up.

I had the same thing happen with the old engine I
had in my truck before. Along with those bolts coming
all the way out, the tranny mount also broke in two
different pieces. This in turn (I think) 'caused my
flexplate to crack in a complete circle around where it
bolts to the crank.
