I have been selling parts for over 12 years with
my own buisness and 2 years for Auto Zone.
I am
also a ASE Certified master tech and Master Machinist
and Alternative Fuels,Exhaust Specialist, and I have
taken and passed ASE Parts Specialist, and now I STILL
have people come in and ask "are ya sure that oil
filter will fit?" and "can i put a starter from my 76
duster on a 85 sundance?"DUH?!?
I get so fed up with
the real stupid questions likw "will using this brand
of oil void my warranty?" or "do you have this thing
right herefor my ford mercury sable?"
OKKKKAAYYYYYYY,,,,,!
OR a stupid idiotic manager who cant fix his own
vehicle without asking me 50 questions and then still
f*&k's it up,OR when a customer comes in and tells me he
has a 355 chevy with a solid roller, ported
aftermarket heads,a huge by large intake,"can you recomend a
carburetor?"
so I take them over to the Holley carb catalogue and
start showing them hp carbs and then manager showed up
and told him tha those big carbs would put in too
much fuel and they need to buy a 600 Holley
instead.
I had a set of Holley heads ,intake, carb, Pro
strip anihilator, distributor and coil and wires sold to
one fella and when I got back customer had been sold
stock HEI for a 87 Monte Carlo and cap ,rotor
,coil, wires oh and a set of cheap valve covers and customer
trashed the bearings after putting on the valve covers
and his rockers rubbed chrome and metal off the
inside of them.
I tried to help customer but stupid
manager decided that he knows more than I do and i've
only been building engines since like 1983!
i get
no respect and the motto at Auto Zone is WITTDJR
"what it takes to do the job right" and when I try to
recomend the proper parts to do the job right (as I was
trained to do as a mechanic) and others with less
knowledge try to give the customer a "quick fix".
I
always recomend all of the proper parts and tools to
retro fit A/C systems to R134A and the stupid idiot
manager comes ove and drops a "kit" on the counter and
says that is all that is needed to "fix it up".
I
have tried to get him to understand that if you just
dump in the oil and refrigerant to a system you pose a
risk of getting the system oil bound and cross mixed
R12/R134A becomes FLAMMABLE! Trust me I know this for a
fact after trying to recharge a system which was a
mixture of both after this person had used a "drop in
kit" of R134A. The car had some bad plug wires and it
was running badly when wet but i was not told so when
i started spraying the system done with soapy water
to find a leak without recharging the system and
leaking it out.
After figuring out what was wrong I
fixed the leak and was recharging it from the R12
ssetup(which had been empty and only had what I recycled from
system)when I started the system to recheck for a restriction
aa hose ruptured and with wet wires the engine
missed, the spark lit the mixture and i got a face full of
flame(luckly all it did was singe a little hair from my
bangs)but then I calleda friend and he did a little
research and the mixture will burn if subjected to proper
conditions.
And later found out that "dipshit" the manager waso
ne who sold him kit,and it cost hime over $600
dollars to replace hoses, compressor, drier orifice tube
and flush system AND pay for disposal of contaminated
material(not cheap) but now he has a car that can run in 100
degree weather and maitain 45 degree outlet temp at idle
(god I love self adjusting orifice tubes hehehe).
I
hate working for idiots who know nothing about legal
repairs and recomend stupid crap that makes us all look
bad.
He also will not consult the catalogue for proper
part numbers ,just go grab a part and say that is what
they need.
AND now he gets a promotion to ASSISTANT
MANAGER!
WHAT A GOOF OFF,it infuriates me and I can do
nothing,I keep gettingtold I'm taking too long with
customers yet I sell as many parts as anyone there and IM
PART TIME!
Oh well thanks for lett

Thats the way the job market is anymore, the more
you know the worse you get shit on. It's nice when
your a F...UP like my neighbor. This guy is 60 looks
and sounds like Hank Hill on King of the hill, add
200pds, subtract 100 points off his I.Q. He quit school
in the 6th grade {when he was 40 haha} can't read or
write and still doesn't believe that water runs down
hill, for real. Because there is 15' of fall from my
yard to his field and when it rains he can't figure
out why it floods, he thinks little fairys are
pumping water back there when he isn't looking. Needless
to say he's worked at G.M. for 35 years, he could
have retired at 30 with full pension but he's to
greedy. He brags about all the stuff he F's up and sits
in the break room half the day. Gets 25 bucks an
hour to sit on a forklift. The world seems to take
better care of people like him.

Lee,
What you say is soo correct it is funny.
Same experience I had when working at the Zone.
Finally worked as Commercial Specialist so did away with
most of the BS that people gave me on the counter,
dealing with mechanics is much better than the everyday
person. And of course the boss always complained that you
spent too much time trying to help a customer with the
Right parts and so forth. Glad I am out of there right
now, but it was fun to help somebodyand have them come
back in and thank you for doing it right the first
time. They would look for the knowledgable person first
and reluctantly let somebody else help them, or find
out when you were working and come back then.
Dick

I'm sorry, but you keep refering to the "dipshit
manager" and then in the end he gets promoted to Assitant
Manager. Just curious, but with all your ASE
whatchamakalits, why are you working at a chain parts house in
counter role? I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just
really trying to understand that piece.

Lee, I can relate to what you're saying about
less than knowledgeable customers, but over the years,
I have come to see things differently. I will
admit, my situation is different, as I am a technician
and not a parts counter man, but I have realized that
without these 'car idiots', You, or I, or all the rest of
us in the repair/parts business would be out of a
job. Think about it, if everyone already knew what
they wanted, they could just walk up to a fully
automated counter and order their parts themselves,
effectively eliminating your position. If they all knew how
to fix their cars, my shop would be empty and I
would be on the unemployment line next to you. The only
people who would benefit would be the tool guys, as
everyone would be buying their tools, and then their
ridiculous prices would be even HIGHER!
So as much as it
sucks, it is nice to have so many of these 'idiots' to
keep us in business.
Just my (probably worthless,
LOL) $0.02 for the day.

Rob.

You don't have to run too fast Brian, I'm
unionized but your absolutely right, Unions take care of
the incompetant, the lazy and those that know how to
screw the system. They do little else for the rest of
us. Sorry, just personal experience.

to brow beat his fellow union brothers, and slams
manuals and kicks parts around like a 6 yo.Geez! Why can't

No need to do the "asshole&elbows".I agree. That's
why my numb-nut leadman is there.he was even the
vice-president of the local at one time, long long ago. That is
the reason he is on the phone all day, yakking it up
w/ the other old crusty farts that have over 30 yrs
on the contract,yet,won't retire,and don't do a damn
thing all day, except suck down coffee, occupy a stall in
the can for an hour, and use up oxygen."Logan's Run"
is looking better all the time.Ooooh welllll,Frank.

im not going to insult your inteligence but are
you sure that was r12 a r134a mix and not one of the
cheap crap mixes like coolit or some crap like that.ive
been taking air conidtioning training at school and
our instructor didnt mention r12 mixed with 134a
being explosive.he did however mention the some other
mixes that are on the market are very explosive and can
really screw up your system.most are mixes of r22 and
some other crap like propane.i dont know the exact
ingredients but i know that anything with r22 in it will
ruine all the rubber seals and hoses.also any mix with
2%or higher hydrocarbon content is cosiderd
explosive.
once again im not trying to start an argument im just
interested.

yes we got a report back on leftovers from
recycling company because of the explosion.
It is rare
cause it requires high energy ignition sorce but its
bad as it burns very hot as it sprays out AND mix
corrodes valves and compressors.Found that on a newly set
up chryco and since it was rebuilt using all new
parts customer coulndt uderstand why metering block was
corroded so I sent him to fella down road wih identifier
and it had 68/32 134/12 mix!
If I had time I could
tell you some completely wierd stuff from repairing
A/C.

Join the few the ex autozoners I to am a master
auto tech i worked for Az for 5 yrs as a asst manager.
Then went to commerical accounts to get a little peace
away from the manager and AAs well that did not last
very long . I had the highest sales in my area when
commerical started with 1500.00 a day to 2000.00 a dayand
they had to mess with a good thing. They have lost
most of there accounts to me when I left AZ to go to
advance auto to run commerical then they to give me a
hard time so i left that to to go back to working on
cars. I try my best to not even go in to these places
if at all possible all they really want is some
young person that know nothing about a car and does not
want to use a book to look up any thing. when I do go
in i always look up my own parts and then tell them
what part # i want this really pisses off the psms and
other managers but at least i know the mistake is mine
when the parts are wrong. so good luck with them maybe
it will work out with you better than it did
me.Maybe you will get a little respect that you deserve
instead of all the slack that they gave me.
