Wish me well, I'm off before long to find an air
intake hose for my car, then I'm going to fiddle with
the radio to try to get something in other than one
AM station, strap up some wiring dangling at the
high beam switch...

Seriously, I think at
least one other member had it right...auto shop class
in high school for boys (please don't tell the ACLU
on me); and home skills we called it home economics
years ago for girls. BEFORE they learn how to drive. At
least as a required half year course. I remember
sitting in class all day once with my shirt sort of full
of transmission fluid as a result of letting the pan
slip while doing a fluid and filter change! (shop was
the first class of the day that year, and no one got
coveralls except for the "dirty" work) Anyone else besides
me ever see someone sitting by the road on the cell
phone calling AAA for a flat, with a perfectly good
spare, and a couple of young guys just looking at the
flat? gee whiz! And the farther we get away from the
farm/ranch/etc. into the city the more important it is to train
the kids.
Certain basic skills are getting lost
for a lot of young men, unless they go to vo-tech
schools after high school.

And everyone should be able to at least change a
modem in their computer, and re-wire their kitchen, and
build cabinets, and at least be able to put up to ten
stitches in their own arm after trying to do all this
stuff. Come on, there is a basic rule of economics
regarding "specilization." Drs. make $200k a year to save
people's lives, why not pay the local guy $15 to change
his oil for him? Heck, I don't even touch my wife's
car. S omething wrong, take it in. Not worth it to me
from a time/money standpoint to work on it. I don't
believe that all people should know how to change their
own oil. I DO believe that all people should know how
to CHECK their own oil level. I don't believe all
people should be able to change their own tire on the
interstate, I do believe all people should know how to react
to a blow-out including getting the hell off the
road and calling a repair person. Anyway, I'm
rambling, waiting for the 10" of snow to stop falling.

I was rambling on a bit too...Waiting for the
rain. Had this happen at the parts store...guy with a
'tude came in trying to blow smoke at the parts counter
not knowing what he needed, counter guy tells him,
customer stalks off in a huff, etc. climbs back into his
Infiniti or something, while counter guy wishes him a good
day.

At any rate, the radio now works better. Loose
connection. Guys should at least be able to trouble shoot
something...but yeah, the flat tire thing was real; momma on the
cell phone, a couple of guys with blank looks for the
flat and spare.

Here here to that.Every teen boy,and girl,should
be required to take Auto Shop,AND,home ek before
getting a learners permit. And the classes should be for a
whole school year.
When I was at the Jr
college, acouple of lil' hot beavers asked me to help w/ a flat
tire.Sure,no prob.Till I saw they were leading me to a
lite-in-the-loafers-lisping-&-hissing "poofer".he/it/whatever had put the bumper jack
on the fender lip and had just "flared" the
fender. When I turned around and left they asked what was
wrong."She'll finger it out." was all I said.
These
aushwitz-refugees w/ the-face-in-the-tackle- box get 'hep' all over
1000watt crap-rap car stereo's and dont know a box end
wrench from a crescent wrench. You gotta laugh to keep
from crying.
