I just bought a 72 vega gt. i've got a 403 olds
that came with it and a turbo 400 tranny. It will be a
drag racing only car and i'm wondering if i should
keep the 403 or buy a 350 smallblock and different
tranny to put in the car. Thanks ahead of time for the
feedback.

Big Block Olds or Small Block Chevy?

If I had my druthers I'd sell the 403 to someone
with a g body and bad 307(if it runs good) find a good
small block ,as heck even with a 305 h bodies
scream.
a 350 cant be that hard to pick up and all you need
a is a flat top 355 (030 over 350)forged pistons
and some good heads (993,487,441 cast numbers for a
start or set of World Sportsman II's)an off the shelf
solid lifter or roller cam, maybe even comps XR300HR10
hyd roller and decent 2800 to 3500 stall
converter/thm350.
If it has a factory 4 link and not the torque arm
setup(I'm not up as much as I should be on Vegas) go grab a
8 in or 9 in rear end out of a Maverick add a mini
spool and some lower gears(3.70 to 4.66)my buddy had a
71 like this and used 14x7 slots with 26x8.5x14
Mickey ET's and ran high 7's low 8's and made him lots a
money and won points meet at our track(my 75 shyhawk
was number 8 in points but we both went out in points
run off first round).
Good luck,
Lee

The 403 Olds is not a big block it's a small block and a very poor performer in stock form.

actually the 403 olds is a smallblock or at least
thats what my freind chris told me.he's a big
oldsmobile fan.he also said that the 403 has the largest
bore of all olds v8's.sounds like a cool setup id keep
the olds if its in good shape.

All Oldsmobile V8's share identical external
dimensions,so there are no small blocks or big blocks in this
respect.

This is similar to the Pontiac V8's that all look
the same 326 to 455 cubic inch...Robert

No they don't, there's at least an 1" in height
and 2" in width. Otherwise they would use the same
intakes and headers which THEY DO NOT!!! as pontiac does.
I don't know about using it, depends on your
budget. When they put those in Trans Ams the were very
sad 18sec 1/4s even with a light cam intake and
headers my wifes stock 78 350 Z would smoke em bad. I
know now I'm going to hear about some one had a stock
one that either ran 10's 1/4 or 180 MPH out running
the cops or a Viper. If you want to spend alot of
money and have something different cool good luck best
wishes, but you could have alot healthier 350 in there
that will bolt right in and you'll have your car out
running around alot sooner and cheaper.

I stand corrected. Just goes to show you they are
too wierd to mess with. Funny thing though, I once
installed a 455 Olds where a 350 Olds was and used the same
exhaust manifolds.

You learn something new every
day...Robert

Actually there are 2 different types of
engines:260/307/330/350/403 1966-85 and 400/425/455 1967 &up.
The engines
have different deck heights and bore/bearing
diameters/strokes and while a 400/425/455 will bolt up they are of
different dimensions than the others and unfortunately I
called a buddy and he informed me that a 403 or 350 old
for that matter wont fit without MAJOR
reconstruction/modification/fabrication for a VEGA or a Monza.
As a fellow Pontiac
lover the Pontiac engines from 265 to 455 are all the
same deck height,width,length etc.
Any Pontiac
engine from 1965 up will all interchange, period.
I
know a fella who had a 301 and took the turbo parts
off and put it on a 350 and installed them in a 65
Tempest with a 4 speed and it would flat scream, after he
bout a better wastegate setup from a turbo 6 Porsche
owner it would run even better. Then he had Gale Banks
set up a blow thru Holley to take place of crappy
Q-jet.
If I had the money I could buy a 78 Trans Am with a
390 horse 428 fully blue printed and a switch pitch
400 that has ran a best of 10.40 in the 1/4 mile with
no NOS.It has some sweet old school heads which are
Dport not Ram Air which I think is so cool, and yes I
saw the car run at IRP and was flat blown away as it
was DQ'ed since it had no cage just subframe
connectors and Cal-Tracs bars.
Oh well hope this
helps.
Lee
