as you guys may or may not know i am currently
building an engine for my monza.ive been waiting to build
this engine for two years and i was very excited at
the start but im starting to get discoraged.ive had a
few problems and some undexpected expenses like 16
new valves due to excessive stem wear on the old
ones.i was planning to install 16 bronze guide inserts
but due to prior guidework i was forces to use
pressin hardened steel inserts and 9 bronze.i orderd 16
hardend seats and two of them we fonud were soft
unfortunatly we didnt find out until there were already
installed and do to a mild pocket port that i did it made
it very difficult to remove the insert. my mail
order parts took three weeks longer and cost $100 more
than i expected dues to poor canadian dallar.and then
today the bad got worse due to improper crank shaft
machining and not thuroghly instecting the crank i did some
damage to my main bearing.i feel so stupid for not
checking the crank.the oil holes werent chamferred ot the
machine shop and for so reason had sharp burrs at the
edges of the oil holes scratched a few of the main
beraings and scuffed all of them.my instructor said they
might still be ok to use but he didnt sound confident
and needless to say that doesnt make me very
confident.
im starting to feel pretty depressed i dont mean to
be a cry baby but i just needed to talk to someone
and you guys are some of the best freinds ive got.

Hey friend,
When I was your age, I attended
Moose Jaw's STI. I drove a 1969 Camaro Z28. Lived in a
tiny basement suite on Clifton Ave. Graduated in 1976
and moved to Albeta. Spent 10 years working 350 hour
months in the oil fields. I then moved to California 13
years ago. I have more cars now than I care to count.
The point is, work hard, don't quit, and in the end
you have your dream. We want to see your car when
it's done. Hang in there dude, you have only hit a
bump in the road. Spring is only a couple of months
away. Plenty of time to finish your ride and be
cruising by summer.....Take care...Barry

Many times the problem with a burred oil hole
comes from someone running a rifle brush through the
hole after the crankshaft is ground. However, a good
chamfer will often prevent this from happening.

I
have used scratched bearings so long as they have no
metal embedded in them. Granted, it is better to
replace them, but you can use them if they are not
toobadly grooved.

I do not use seats of any kind.
I have run 1970 429 heads with 350+ lb. open
pressure on unleaded fuel for over 80,000 miles with no
problems. I would only change seats if they cannot be
brought back into shape.

As for valves and
guides, I just ream them .003" or .015" and install
oversize stem valves. My heads seem to last much longer
this way.

I hope this information is
helpful...Robert

Amen Brother. There's alot of people out there doing machine work that shouldn't be aloud to handle anything sharper than a twinkie.

Many times, when I do a set of heads with poor
seats, I just open them up to 2.02 / 1.60 and make the
new seats exactly how I want them to be.

I
just finished a set of 461 heads for a gentleman in
Broken Hill, Australia. They were 1.94 / 1.50 and the
seats were pretty wide. I opened the bowls to match the
new valves and cut the three distinct angles on the
seat to put them where I want them on the
valves.

I also cut the valve face on either side of the
seating area to provide a smooth tansition. The finished
product looked like a factory job.

send me an
e-mail at Bigbadvoodoovega@aol.com if you ever need help
or info...Robert

Hold on a second. Get a second opinion on your
crankshaft. I have chamfered the holes on a damaged crank by
taping off the journals with duct tape and using a
Dremel to cut a mild radisu around the oil hole.

You can also have the crank polished to remove a
little material. Tell the machinst you want it it
polished to the low side of the spec. You should have
enough material to do this. My local machinist charges
me $10.00 for this service.

E-Mail me if I
can be of
assistance...Robert

i already chamfered the holes and polished the
crank myself by hand using a rope and some very fine
emery but that didnt fix the biggest problem the
journal were out of round way out of spec.the only way to
fix it would be too grind it again and hey had
already taken it down .020" and the last thing i wanted
in my engine is a .030" undersized cast crank so i
got pretty upset because i sent them a good crank and
got back a peice of crap.but thats not the end of the
story.

after thinking it over i and i exepted defeat and my
instructor to see if he could find a forged steel crank.
lucky enouf the machine shop just happend to have one
and it could be machined to .020" under for $212.i
was still very upset and frustrated and even though
it meant i would have to borrow the money i said to
get it and went back to work on the rest of the
engine.after coffee the instructor took me aside and told me
he was going to buy me the crank and all i would
have to pay for was the new bearings.he said that he
was going to writ it off somehow.im not sure why he
decided to do this for me but i am very
grateful.

this time im being more carfull me and my friend steve
chanferd the oil holes and polished the crank emediatly
and befor we install it we are going to measure the
journals for out of round.hopfully this one will be done
better than the first one was.
