I am in the process of removing the v6 & 5sp from
a 79 monza 2+2. I am installing the stock 262 and
sagina 4sp that i took out of my 75 2+2 when I put in
the 350 & muncie. I am finding out that there is some
structure difference between the 75 & 79. For instance the
transmission cross member is totally different (looks lighter
duty) and there are no mounting holes on the
transmission tunnel for the 75 4sp shifter to mount to. I do
have 2 complete 75 v-8 2+2's for parts. Is this
because the 79 was a v-6, or are all of the 79 2+2's this
way (even with the factory v-8)? Has any one else ran
into this and what did you do to make the swap
work?
Perry

Perry,

The '75 Monza is a bit of an
odd car. The 4 speed cars had the shifter welded to
the floor, but the '75 Vega was bolted in. The
panhard rod on the rear diff is also located differently
then the '76 and up Monza. You can get it all to fit,
but you will have to make a new trans crossmember (or
find out if the '75 V8 crossmember is avalible). You
will have to make a bracket to fasten the shifter to
the tunnel..

Tim

I would get the shifter from another 76 and up
car. The original tranny mount on your 79 has multiple
mounting holes and just needs to be lined up with the
right holes.
Let me know what the 75 parts cars look
like as I am always looking for parts for my 75. Need
black non ac dashpad, kickpanels, 4 speed shift boot
and bezel, engine brackets, smog and lots of other
odds and ends. email me at monzaaddict@lycos.com

I have the emblems and 4 speed shift boot/trim ring from a 1977 Monza 2+2. Including the 'Monza' glovebox emblem. Would these help you???...Robert

There is a removable panel on the top of the
trans tunnel for mounting the shifter. I know they are
different betweent the auto and 4 spd, and I would guess
also the 5 spd. You may need to either cut some of the
carpet around the shifter(will be hidden it you have a
console) or remove the carpet from the car to get access
to all of the screws on this panel.

Perry,
I did the opposite, put a 79 V6 in my
75, in place of the 2.3L 4banger. Had a lot of
differences, to include a shorter driveshaft/torque arm. Had
to highly modify the linkage for the Saginaw, wish I
had a 5 speed to put in. However, with some
imaginative modification everything works.

Tim, I will admit that I did this many, many
years ago but when I replaced my stock 4 speed shifter
with a Hurst Competition Plus on my 75 Monza, I do not
remember the shifter being welded to the tunnel. Actually
it was quite the opposite. I remember it being
mounted on rubber grommets to the tunnel. This would
allow some movement between the trans and the shifter
since the shifter was not mounted to the trans. I know
it was a "unbolt it" affair. Clyde

Thanks for all of the input on my swap, I
appreciate the help. The v-6 has over 200,000
miles and 1
of the rod bearings got a little loose and it
started to knock. Luckly I caught it in time and there
was no damage done ( the crank had minor damage,
would need to be cleaned up). Instead of spending the
money to rebuild it, I decided to drop in the 262 that
I already have.
Thanks again.
Perry
