Ok for the record a 120 amp csi144 alternator the
same as the one on my 70 monte carlo pulled 2.5 hp on
the dyno charging a holley anihilator race cell and
all the electronics (all holley and holley fuel pumps
and a 3 stage nitrous) and at the peak (all things
operating) we only lost 2.5 hp (thats with 105 amp output
,as we loaded the alternator with a carbon pile
tester as it ran so we could verify running power for
customers requirements).
Anyway a standard flex fan can
put anywere from 4.5 to 19 hp depending on brand and
design. As for air flow I used a 12 model I picked up used
at a swap meet and used it on my 71 montecarlo with
radiator and condenser inplace and it only covered 60
percent of rad unlike stock shroud and clutch fan
covering 90 percent and it cooled perfectly.
Now I took
it off the shroud it came on when I bought it and
installed it directly on the radiator in m7 77 monza and
never had it over heat and the car never ran higher
that 200 at any time.
In my experience I have made
more power and better mileage running my lower
compression engines at approx 190 to 200 with better
results.
BUT if you ever work on late model S-10's/s-blazers
and change thermostats and refill the radiators and
if you run the engine you can visibly see and
physicaly feel the clutch fan clutch and declutch and it
works as good as an electric fan but as for packaging
and performance I will always run an electric
fan.
my 77 monza had only the 12in electric fan and stock
shroud in front(every hbody I've had has ran hot with
out the factory airdam under the front end) and all I
had for a radiator was a stock 3 row monza a/c unit
(old number 464) with the curved upper spout ,which I
turned down a little.
But as that style radiator is
not available anymore from Auto Zone I will run the
straight neck 3 row v6 radiator as the core is the
same.
Good Luck
Lee

Lee,

Great info! But does the electric
flow as well? I guess I was just thinking out loud,
and was not trying to state one is better than the
other. It sounds like the ele fan flows well enough to
cool effectively without loading the electrical
system.

I also wonder how much of the fan load
was being handled by the battery, and how long it
would hold that load before the alt loaded the engine,
but you also state it was producing 105 amps, so it
sounds pretty loaded!

I think I might switch to
ele fan once I replace the dinky little 35amp alt I
have now. If I run lights, fan, and wipers, there is
barely enough power to run the blinkers!

Cheers!

I up graded my monte to a AC Delco alt #321-411
and have had it on there since 1994 and 70000+ miles
with no problem and all I did to make it fit was (on
the big block as the alt bolt is bigger than
sbc)drill out the bottom hole and used a cresent wrench to
move the upper bracket up to fit it and i have put one
on a small block with same tricks less
drilling.
The load was 105 amps and it lost 2.5 hp total
running 2 fuel pumps, nos, electric fan and electric dyno
water pump also and the engine never seems to know that
it has an alt belt on it and actually will slow down
at track when it throws a belt(it will have a
serpintine belt, according to owner, this year).
After a
friend of mine got his neck severly cut by a fan coming
apart when he was trying to check timing as he reved it
up. I kept that in mind and then when i went to big
block in my monte (after my bad wreck back in 1994) and
just went to junkyard and snaged a good fan from an
old firenza added a chrysler thermal switch and a
junkyard relay, plug, fuse. It has ran till this winter when
bearings went out and have been running with out a fan
thru winter, but i have a new fan motor on my spare fan
frame, ithink its from a bretta or something like that.I just
gotta get it on.
good luck
Lee

Lee,

Thanks! I have looked into serpetine belts, and this is something I would love to do, but I must wait for budget. Thanks for the info on the Alt.

Cheers,

That is what most people think.

The
problem is that it is not correct.
The generator
already robs hp and the incrised hp robbing is way much
less then what a mecanical rob at it
peak.

Another thing is electric do operate at max speed on idle
pushing much more air throu at idle.

Any way I
never use the fans at highway speed so they don`t rob
hp. In general I use them on idle in town or cruice
nights.

I also earlyer used the at the track but with the
new cooling package I hope I do not
halfto.

The advantage of the mecanical is that it helps to
push hot air better out of the egine
compartment.

The only problem with that is space...

Good
thinking Jeff.

Hmmmmm....Reach up there and see if you can feel hot air coming through those holes at idle...Robert

Personally i think that mechanical fans are a
waste of space and power but some vehicles use them
still.
I have ran my 70 10.5 to 1 402 bbc Monte Carlo with
out a fan mechanical or electric all winter and only
problem was in an extended idle period.
And also in my
77 I kept paying attention to when the fan ran and
when it didnt and I had very little problems with heat
and after giving car some more airflow(bigger carb)
it ran even cooler.
I was even getting better
mileage till I wrecked it(damn it).
I have ran
electric fans for the last 8 years and have never had any
problems accept the silly old junkyard fan I bought used
back in 94 finally went bad.

It is from a Europen car I think you don`t have
:)

Citroen Xantia 2.0i 16v

Sounds familiar?
:)

It is twin fans in a plastic cage.

I can post
pictures of it in my photo section.

Take a look
here in the Vega mods this winter
2002:
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/erik_norway

You can probably find something like them in many
cars.

Best of luck with you project.

If there are any Citroen Xantia's in the states
there aren't very many.

I saw your photos, and
liked the way you were able to get it to fit. That is
why I asked.

I am going to be installing a
larger radiator soon and would rather use electic fans
than an engine driven fan.

Yes, it seems to be quite a bit actually. I am
using the 7blade mechanical fan, no clutch. I also
rigged a full shroud using angle alumunium, and the old
v6 plastic shroud and maybe that elp create more
pressure at idle. I would guess that at speed, it is hard
for air to get out of the wheel, or its just easier
for it to exit from below becuase of the negative
pressure behind the front spoiler.
