Ok for the record a 120 amp csi144 alternator the
same as the one on my 70 monte carlo pulled 2.5 hp on
the dyno charging a holley anihilator race cell and
all the electronics (all holley and holley fuel pumps
and a 3 stage nitrous) and at the peak (all things
operating) we only lost 2.5 hp (thats with 105 amp output
,as we loaded the alternator with a carbon pile
tester as it ran so we could verify running power for
customers requirements).
Anyway a standard flex fan can
put anywere from 4.5 to 19 hp depending on brand and
design. As for air flow I used a 12 model I picked up used
at a swap meet and used it on my 71 montecarlo with
radiator and condenser inplace and it only covered 60
percent of rad unlike stock shroud and clutch fan
covering 90 percent and it cooled perfectly.
Now I took
it off the shroud it came on when I bought it and
installed it directly on the radiator in m7 77 monza and
never had it over heat and the car never ran higher
that 200 at any time.
In my experience I have made
more power and better mileage running my lower
compression engines at approx 190 to 200 with better
results.
BUT if you ever work on late model S-10's/s-blazers
and change thermostats and refill the radiators and
if you run the engine you can visibly see and
physicaly feel the clutch fan clutch and declutch and it
works as good as an electric fan but as for packaging
and performance I will always run an electric
fan.
my 77 monza had only the 12in electric fan and stock
shroud in front(every hbody I've had has ran hot with
out the factory airdam under the front end) and all I
had for a radiator was a stock 3 row monza a/c unit
(old number 464) with the curved upper spout ,which I
turned down a little.
But as that style radiator is
not available anymore from Auto Zone I will run the
straight neck 3 row v6 radiator as the core is the
same.
Good Luck
