If you are going to use adaptors you should use
some loctite to help hold the adapter bolts in place.
Preferrably, why not convert to 5 lug using Chevy S10 axles
and spindles. It is a whole lot safer and not that
expensive of a change. Of course, if you want to stay
original the 5 luggers won't work. Spacers are much safer
than adapters, but don't go too thick. I have run 1/4"
spacers with no problems. Like said previously don't,
increase the length of the wheel studs to be sure you get
a enough threads to grip with the lug nuts so that
the wheels don't come off. A thick stud as well
wouldn't hurt.

Stay Safe,

JD

Not to second guess anyones previously posted,
great advice, But,

about or 8 years, and about
8 monza's ago I had a blue V8 4spd monza using (on
the rear) 4 lug 14" 8 in wide cragers with 245/60R
14. When I found the passenger side was rubbing a
bit, I ran to pep boys and bought a 1/4 spacer. or
whatever size they had..maybe 3/16ths?
Anyhow...I just
bolted it on and drove like a lunatic.
I would
always chirp the tires in 2 gears, trying for 3.

Nothing ever broke,or even came loose.
These crager
rims, ('centerlines' style) used some long shank lug
nuts, which probably held on with more threading than the
stock lug.
I probably drove it like this for
hmm..about a year and a half.

Just my expirience.

Thanx Lee.I couldn't remember all the details on
specific spacers that worked.I think even some Porsches'
had spacers for some such reason,electro-chemical
meat hard drive fails me here again.LOL

Moser Engineering can redrill your hubs and
rotors for 5 lug,if you don't want to go w/ the S 10
swap.Close to 70% of the weight of a V8 H-body car is on the
front wheels.Imagine the loads on those studs cornering
and braking. The 'sheer' forces are Xtreme! The
established mod.s here are the safe way to go.

problems, and i drive hard since i put this truck together to
corner. mine are 62mm(2.5in.)spacers and i always

<< Spacers are much safer than adapters,

Personally I disagree
with this. I have used spacers and dont feel
comfortable with the amount of stud you use up on those
things. I also dont like how they are "universal" and
thus are not hub-centric. I have seen those things
corrode into white powder here in the midwest since they
make them out of a low grade aluminum.

In my
opinion, the bolt on adapter is the way to go. You have a
solid piece of heat-treated alloy that is hub-centric
and solid. A truely modern one (ie, find a good shop)
is not like the shoddy ones that were mass produced
in the 70's.

BTW, I should clarify that I am
talking about 5-lug to 5-lug adapters with the same bolt
centers and NOT a work-around to the "S-10 method" of
5-lug conversion. I also dont think that adapters over
1" should be used...

Actually If you dont want to spend lots of money
get a set with a 5 on 4 1/2 mounting patern and what
ever pattern you want for your wheels.
Now dont
tell me someone out ther doesnt make them cause i know
of about 2 dozen low rider trucks with adapters that
change bolt patterns and you can redrill any 76-up monza
axle for a 5 on 4 1/2 any day of the week as thats
what i did on my first hbody a 75 Buick Skyhawk with
76 rear brakes (and i used 76 master cylinder and
prop valve with 75 calipers with no problems back
then, for as much as i knew).

As most people use big and littles on hbodies I'd
use a s10 conversion on front and redrill the rear
axles for a "ford" bolt pattern, besides we wouldnt use
"ford "wheels would we just a "ford/dodge" pattern.I
wouldnt use the 75 and down axles but the 76 and up works
perfectly and 76 and up axles ,redrilled, will fit 75 rears
fine.

Clyde,
Just to revisit once more. Some of the
75 Rears in H-bodys were 6.5" ring geared with small
spider gears. The axle flange might not bre wide enough
to re-drill. The one from a 75 Monza I had done was
marginal.

John B, ok, I didn't realize we were talking
about 6.5" rears. So can 75 axles from a 7.5" be
redrilled for 5 lugs? I realize it is probably better just
to pick up S-10 axles, I am just considering all
options. Clyde

It really depends but all the 75's came with puny
vega brakes but i found that the 75 I had had about
3/8 less diameter axle flange so I didnt want to
redrill the axles with less metal.
Then I was offered
(supposedly) a 3.73 geared rear end but it wound up being a
3.08 but I modified the panhard bar mount on the later
axles(75's are different than 76 and up)and "farmer brown
posi'ed" the rear end and had fun.
This was in 1990 in
my 75 buick skyhawk factory v6 ,which I installed a
327/350 setup and ran consistent 9.30's in the
1/8th.
I used 76 axles and rear brakes and master
cylinder/prop valve andsome mix of 75 and 76 front brakes a
list of which I canteven remember.
You really have
to measure them cause i think gm only had somany of
the small diameter axles as I have a 75 and it had
small brakes but a large axles so I wonder,,,,?
