Does anyone have the scoop on whether or not increasing the plug gap from 0.045" to 0.060" WILL improve power?

I doubt it, but it WILL erode your contacts in
the cap faster, as well as the breaker points, if so
equipped. That being said, your best bet is to give it a
shot and see what happens. . .its the only way to be
sure.

True what say, in 1975 they called for a .060 gap
on HEI and found it was hard on the caps, so they
went to .045 and they went to a hotter plug R45TS. I
believe they used the R44TX on the .060 gap, have to look
it up to be sure. As soon as my hand stops!!!

So what was GM's reasoning behind increasing the gap to 0.060" during the mid 70's?

Emissions and the use of HEI, cause 75 was the first year they used CAT. converters and they needed a hot spark for emissions.

On the dyno i have never had any problems getting
any engine, especially a chevy , to run well with
.045 to.050 max and have never had to open the gaps
any more and sometimes I have even found closer gaps
work better in some instances.
The only system I
can brag about ,which made more power or aeleast let
us change jetting to get more power was a
rediculusly expensive Nology plug wires and they has some
bite when using massive amounts of NOS even with a HEI
and Performance Distributors Dyna Mod and Dyna
coil, but you have to use good brass terminal cap.
i
would use a good cap and rotor, quality spiral core
wires and standard r45ts plugs in later model heads and
r45s in gasket seat heads but you will have to decide
in your own application.
