My Motor Mounts

I purchased liquid polyurethane
rubber.
(PMC-780 SHORE 80A Hardness 3 lbs. $25.00
www.smooth-on.com)
I burned the rubber out of my old motor
mounts.
I built a fixture with two 45 degree angles out of
scrap 2x6.
I bolted the motor mounts to the fixture
to suspend them in position.
I used duct tape
(bad choice) to wrap one end of the mounts.
I mixed
part A and part B of polyurethane resin.
I poured
the mixture into the motor mounts.
I let them cure
overnight.
I bolted them in my 1978 V8 Sunbird.

Thanks..........Roger.aka....KS_Skyhawk

Roger,
If I were doing this over again I
would use their SHORE 90A hardness. 90A is the hardest
polyurethane they consider a rubber. 80A is one step below
that. SHORE D is the scale for semi-rigid plastics. I'm
reluctant to make any recommendations because this is new
to me and only time will tell if its a good
option.

Roger,

I installed a poly rear mount and
found a higher
level of vibration in the car. I
would prefer a
softer poly, if I had a choice. What
is the difference between the two compounds, as far
as stiffness is concerned ? What prompted you to
recommend a harder choice?

Roger,

I just want to say again that I
don't recommend anything.
I also wanted to avoid
too much vibration so I played it safe and got 80A.
This is the only experience I have with this stuff.
The 80A is much stiffer than the factory rubber and I
believe my mounts are better than stock by far (not
saying much) but I'm guessing 90A wouldn't hurt. Its a
tough call. I'm satisfied with the 80A.
They sent me
literature here's what it says for
applications:

80A:
Casting Concrete
Industrial Wheels and
Pulleys
Industrial Rollers
Rubber Mechanical Parts
Vibration
Pads

90A:
Industrial Rollers and Belts
Ball Mill Liners
Casters
and Impellers
Concrete Stamping Pads
Foundry
Patterns

I can't imagine these will crap out like the stock
ones.If they don't hold up I have another set of old
mounts I'll try the 90A. It the cheapest alternative!
Hope this helps.

Roger

That sounds like a great idea! How did you tell whether or not you had the geometry correct before you poured the liquid into the mounts?

I drilled the holes in the fixture oversized for
adjustment and then squared them up best I could and assumed
everything should be centered and tightened them. I figured
worst case I'd adjust the holes in the frame mounts
with a rattail file. They turned out slightly narrow
but went in without filing. The draglink cleared but
I shimmed them 3/16" to be safe and now have 3/8"
clearance. I don't know what the actual clearance ts
supposed to be.
By the way, if anyone tries this find
something better than duct tape to seal the end. One side
had a few drips but the other side had a blowout and
I had to pinch it closed for a half hour while it
set up.

How about a piece of that thin shower wall covering? Or does that stuff get real hot when it cures?
