I was just looking at my 327 block and
noticed
an interesting feature. Around the casting
for
the distributor shaft I see some extra material in
the block. This extra
casting has an (approximate)
1.5" hole on top (just to the left of
the
distributor hole) continuing into the oil well area under the
intake
manifold. I suspect this was used in older engines that
utilized the "solid"
valve covers (i.e. no place for a
PCV valve) to vent the crank case and any
"blow
by". Am I correct? If not, what is it for? And more
importantly, how
do I deal with it, because I don't think I
will utilize it (and the intake
manifold doesn't
cover it). Can I use a freeze plug? Any information
and
suggestions and techniques would be greatly
appreciated.
