engine casting question

I was just looking at my 327 block and
noticed
an interesting feature. Around the casting
for
the distributor shaft I see some extra material in
the block. This extra
casting has an (approximate)
1.5" hole on top (just to the left of
the
distributor hole) continuing into the oil well area under the
intake
manifold. I suspect this was used in older engines that
utilized the "solid"
valve covers (i.e. no place for a
PCV valve) to vent the crank case and any
"blow
by". Am I correct? If not, what is it for? And more
importantly, how
do I deal with it, because I don't think I
will utilize it (and the intake
manifold doesn't
cover it). Can I use a freeze plug? Any information
and
suggestions and techniques would be greatly
appreciated.

engine casting question

Why not use this as the PCV hole, if you can find
an appropriate grommet? You are correct, on the
older 327s that used to be where the crankcase vent
tube was inserted. Jeeze, they used to let everything
puke on the street, antifreeze/coolant and oil,
anyway, some aftermarket valve covers have knockouts for
the PCV valve so you don't necessarily have to use
them. You might even consider using a set of Old
Corvette Valvecovers without the PCV provision for that
engine. Just a thought or two.

engine casting question

I am not receiving all my e-mails and many of my
replies are going unanswered. My PC and my AOL Mailbox
are acting very strange. I believe I addressed this
question via e-mail, so I thought I would post the answer
here to be sure it is getting through.

That
extra hole is for the oil separator/PCV on the early
engines. You can use this setup if you like, but I prefer
the newer system.

Having the PCV in the valve
covers seems to keep the top of the engine cleaner. Just
plug the hole with a Dorman Brass Freeze Plug part
#565-024.

I hope this information is helpful...Robert

I wish I would have kept my old blocks like that,
cause I love those Edelbrock classic elite valve
covers, and I don't have the balls to knock holes in $150
valve covers. I have a very old set on my Javelin {bad
word?}.

I don't like those evac systems that go in the headers I feel those are only good for drag cars.

Jim,
You are correct, it was for the downdraft tube, It also could have been for an early PCV fitting. You can plug it if you are using the PCV in the valve cover.

Hi Robert,

I figured that was the case. I didn't get a reply from you and when I read that your PC went down, I put 2+2 together.

Thanks to all who responded...
