Stock LS6's run low 14's to high 13's and I've
seen stock Poncho 400's run better. As for the song my
hearing is getting worse from all the years at the
track...

Take er easy

Call me crazy.. but I have always been a torque
fan. With the right rear gears do you really need lots
of high end power??? Nope... and you get better gas
milage to boot... As for sheer preformance, I used to
run a '68 Firebird with a 455 and tri-power... you
wanna call that one a boat anchor and I will leave tire
marks all over you. with stock manifolds, heads, turbo
400 trans and 3.73 limited slip posi it would pull
low 12s all day long and get you about 22 mpg on
highway if you kept foot out of it. Of course at the time
I had the car... late 80's early 90's I tended to
have to stomp those nasty little pony drivers, aka 5.o
mustangs, into submission regularly as they seemed to think
that they were special. But that same car in the same
trim would also wind the speedo all the way around...
and it went to 160. I know.. I did this on the
highway. Not something I recommend doing. Well, need to
get gong now... sleep calls.
John.

BOAT ANCHOR!!! My Monza runs low 8's 1/4, 60mpg, and 225mph top end. It puts tire tracks on Poncho's and I still have it. $500,000,000 heads up racing.

those old cars are a blast to drive, but, you have
to admit that 500 inch motors are kind of a
dinosaur. thought i would never say that.local guy
has a
dodge omni, yes i said dodge omni that runs high
10's/low11's with a turbo/intercooled 4banger with no
wastegate.when i had my vette,i poured thousands upon thousands
of dollars in that damn thing and best e.t. i ever
got was 12.06. this guy has a ole piece o crap dodge
omni he paid a grand for ,maybe has 4k in it(all in
motor, body is crap) and his piece o crap omni would flat
blow the doors of my ole vette.

Thank You for the reality that it costs money for
speed, not the normal B.S. that someone has less than a
$1000 in a car that runs 9's 1/4 or 5's 1/8, the only
case I have EVER SEEN close a guy had a 78 or 79 turbo
Regal, paid $50 for body{rear frame rails gone & no
motor} 455 Olds free, had NOS kit from his old car, and
still had over a $1000 in it. Car was gutted, no sway
bar or shocks in front, without NOS high 12's, with
NOS 10's I believe low 10's but its been many years,
motor did have a torker intake, something like 510 lift
headers and headwork. But it took NOS to get good times
cheap. He aways told me I could run low 12's with NOS
the way my car is...

hasnt done squat to the body,he put all the money in
motor work.the guy is a local
country radio dj.next
time he comes in i will take a pic of his car,its ugly
as hell.and it doesnt run 9's in the 1/4,i never

I was glad to hear that someone was spending
money to get speed, the example I gave was the fastest
car I have ever seen for a little over a thousand.
But in alot of these clubs and on the street you hear
alot about the cars guys have 5 bucks in and run warp
speed with stock motors, you stated having money in you
car and he in his. I read your post and said this
ain't Bull Shit and thanked you for an intellegent
post. Same goes for the 455 Poncho bit, People didn't
understand the HAVE SEEN part of the posts, I know there
have to be strong ones out there I have never seen
them. Then I hear about 22MPG & 160 MPH with 3.73s he
should try changing his speedo gear. If guys are
building cars like this, they should apply for a job at
Petty Enterprises, or somewhere they'll make over 6
digits a year.

Hey Cliff,
Back in 98 on the East coast Power
Tour I met some of the guys at Rousch Racing when they
opened up there shop in Mooresville NC and put some tour
member cas on there chasis dyno(mine included)and a
fella working there by the name of Phill had a 80 turbo
ta with a destroked 400 with hand built fuel
injection designed on a Torker II and older motec fuel
injection from a Porche racer that ran 166 at silver states
and since he put the th2004r built by Art Car he got
20 plus mile to the gallon(if he kept his foot) out
of it and i do believe he either had 3.43 or 3.73's
but its been almost 4 yrs and im not sure what he ran
for rear gear BUT he ran 166 (he had some straight
trap speed slips that a local electronics company
handed out after race as they tested there equipment for
super speedway clocking) so getting good mileage is
possible and he was bragging that he only had $5500 in the
whole car,(he traded building a tow truck engine for
the paint job,{jet black and straight as a
pin}).
I had a fella in another room tell me that a 383
couldnt make 588 lb ft of torque then Hot Rod shows a
crate 383 making 502 with very little work,(ours had
race ported heads/intake an a custom CAM MOTION
cam).
But anyway i dont knock any ones stuff as i have
helped on race cars and race engines that do some very
impressive things for less than the "big name builders" do
because we dont slave ourselves to a narrow number of
parts.
I called a company to recreate a race engine for a
friend that was out of town for a week long race and
they wouldnt because they wouldnt use the cam company
we used to recreate the cam or piston company we
used.
Their excuse was they couldnt get a good
enough deal to make it worth there time(and we were
going to pay them $6000 to build an engine! and they
wouldnt use parts we wanted!!!!).oh well we found a small
town speed shop near by the track and they built the
engine and only charged $1400 and the car went out and
ran .015 under its best ever time there and my
customer made it to semis and brought home $12500 (less
repairs bills and expensise)but hey he made a $1000
dollars over his regular paycheck while on vacation
hehehe.
Lee

Mmmm, would you like to come and see my '76 TA?
It has that boat anchor in it and it can haul it
too! The Pontiac 455 is a great motor when you open it
up a bit with headers, a good long duration cam, and
a really big carb(780 or bigger). Mine flat gets
it! It sure give my Spyder a run for it off the line,
but I cant catch it after 100mph( I run out of
gears!).

If in Dallas, look for the Black '76 TA with the
custom plates 'HER 455'. And yes it is actually my
wifes.

Jeff in Dallas.

Lee, Yes good milage with overdrive is possible,
and fuel injection helps spice it up a bit. But a tri
power and 3.73 without O.D.? Even the Quadrajet got
better milage than the factory 2bbl, and at a 160mph,
depending on tire highth thats in the ballpark of 7000-7500
rpm out of a stock motor. What about wind sheer at
that speed? Needing to lower car and install some sort
of spoilers? Those old cars weren't designed for
that speed. I wont knock it if it sounds reasonable,
this just dont sound reasonable.

Cliff

P.S. I'm talking about the 68 Bird just to clarify
things. Thanx

Who says stock engines wont go 7500?
My
neihbor and probably the best friend i've ever had when
it comes to helping with projects had a 73 nova he
bought cheap, then bought the 283 that the guy he got
the nova from had and ran it for like 3 yrs and NEVER
did more than normal dervice(plugs ,oil etc) and he
turned 7500 with it everytime in went down the
track.
He now has a 350 block with a 307 crank, X rods with
good bolts and 375 hp/327 fuelie 11.25 to 1 forged
pistons and he says it wants to go farther than his 6500
shift point but our machinist keeps telling him the
ollder pistons cant take the rpms but i really dont
think 7500 would hurt it and all he has oem replacement
"Z-springs" which we still use on most of our engines unless
we are building big hp engines.
Now as for a
Pontiac engine making good mileage numbers on a tripower
it can and has been done.As for 160 mph maybe
because I have seen Pontiacs pull good numbers mph wise
both in top speed and quarter mile times.I dont like
to rpm Pontiacs as they are torque engines and to
make good time dont need to be rpm'ed.
But unless
someone has either trap speeds or radar readings I'd
wonder about how a person got that speed number.
Lee
