most s-10 "posi" are ratchet type
some also call them GOV-LOCK
try to avoid them
use a clutch type or cone type from a 1982 and up F or G body

Thanx, I'm not a big fan of the cone type, I've killed my fair share of them when I raced at the track on a regular basis...

Actually the s10 had three versions of limited
slip, the familiar flat clutch plate posi, the
"crap-loc" gov-loc model and some (export models only it
seems) a gear/locker unit but this unit was an as
shipped part and I have never found a "new" part number
yet.

Paul,
You can use the S-10 2WD rear end
complete as far as length goes. You will have to remove
the S-10 spring pads and replace them with the ones
from your H-body. Don Hardy used to sell the brackets,
and they still may be available through Bob Gumm's
website, V8monza.com. They will be for the 4 link early
Vega rear only though. If you are using a more recent
rear with the torque arm you might be wise to consider
ordering the adapter gears and races and switching the
gears into the H-body housing. Good Luck.

Can i continue on using my stock housing and just
changing the gut in the housing to beef it up. is thet
what you are saying. Now i have the stock end with 373
gears and have not had many problems but i know the
gears and the end wont last.

Paul,
What year is your Vega? If it is a 71-74
it has a 4 link suspension in the rear and a 6.5
ring and pinion set. If this is what you have, you'll
have to switch the control arm mounts to a new rear
end. In this case you'd may wish to get the Don Hardy
mounts from Bob Gumm, if he sells them through his site.
These could then be welded on an S-10 rear end as a
complete unit. Otherwise you'll have to grind the welds
carefully and remove the mounting brackets from your
existing rear end. Then have them welded to the new
housing.
