Dash in sad state of disrepair

My dash (in my '80 Starfire) is in really bad
shape - mainly above the instrument panel. It's
sun-damaged and worn all the way down to metal. Is this
something that an upholstery shop can rejuvinate? Do I
replace the thing? Any interior experts out there?
Hehehe. Thanks in advance guys.

Dash in sad state of disrepair

My dash (in my '80 Starfire) is pretty ate up as
well. Looks like a landshark climbed into the car and
took a bite out of it. Dried, cracked, padding
missing, metal showing, faded... Shall I go on?

My
solution? Well, if you pull the dash out, a good upholestry
shop should be able to put on new padding and recover
it for you, however it won't look factory. Maybe
just the color. You could try to find one original,
but you need a lot of luck. Since I am modifying mine
to be a functional modern day driver with "cajones",
I have decided to have one made. I will have it
formed out of heavy gauge sheet metal or aluminum (not
sure yet). First estimates are about $200. I can paint
it whatever color I want, and I can put in my own
gauges. The rest of the hookups (vents, heater controls,
stereo) I will work out later, but will proabably be
served with cutouts and screw in plates.
