Hi, im a new member of this club. My name is
Corey , I live in Abbotsford B.C. Canada. I own a 1980
Monza(the one with a trunk) with a 4 banger going thru an
auto trany. oh yah and im 17 years old, my car is the
first car that I have owned. anyone know of any
websites that speak of performance 4 bangers?
I know
it might sound funny but I want to play around with
this little engine. small light engine with
decent-good power in a small light car is a good combination.

Hello all. I'll jump right in. I have a 1980
Monza Spyder with a bunch on non-Monza parts. A short
list is:
350, aluminum heads, medium output
5
speed, Camaro T5
F body rear axle, Borg Warner
Australian w/ discs
S10 front spindles/brakes
mid 80's
vintage 15" Z28 wheels
I haven't driven it in years,
I've had it for almost 10. I'm thinking about getting
it out again for Grassroots Motorsports Magazine
$1500 challenge. It's a three event (Drag race,
autocross, show) informal event. My question is: has anyone
done more than add stiff springs and shocks for better
handling? I've already swapped the upper control arms right
to left for more caster and doubled up the front
anti-roll bar. Any other tricks?

Welcome to the club, Tim. I dont have any answers
to your questions, but I do have have a question for
you. What all was involved in the Fbody rearend swap?
What kind of modifications did you have to do to for
the torque arm? And also how well do the wheels fit
or did you have to modify the wheel wells? The
reason I ask is I have a 77 Monza and an 83 Z28. I was
going to sell the Camaro, but if I can use parts from
it on my Monza then I will do that.

Bobby

Hey Tim - welcome! It sounds as if you're a
road-racer of sorts and I'm guessing that you already
subscribe to Grassroots Motorsports magazine. To answer
your question about suspension hop-ups for a Monza,
read about "Monzter - Ken Mersereau's ITA Chevy
Monza", Grassroots Motorsports, May/June 1997, Vol. 14,
No. 1, pp. 14-17. I bought this back-issue for (I
think) $3 from them. It's a great article on Ken's
purple racer and if I recall has suspension specs in it.
I have this mag at home if you want me to give you
some quotes from the article.... Good luck and
welcome!

Ken

Hi, I just joined this online club.
I have a
1980 Monza coupe which was originally
a 4 cyl/auto.
I just put in a 350 using
the Hooker mounts. I
don't have the headers
in yet--I plan to get them
ceramic coated.

I also still need a fuel pump,
starter,
and a radiator. Any suggestions?

Does anyone
know if someone makes 5-lug discs/hubs that fit the
stock spindles?

I need a right-rear taillight
for a Monza coupe.
Anyone have one for sale?

That's about it for now. I'm sure I'll have
other
questions and will try and answer when
I can. My other
cars are a '97 S-10 (stock),
'90 Mazda Miata
(swapped the engine myself,
but just with another stock
engine), and
an '88 Fiero.

The Monza is a
project car and I hope to
get it set up to compete in
CP autocrossing
and bracket racing (though really
low
E.T.s isn't my goal--just consistency
for
now).

isn't my goal).

Welcome to the club, MM! To answer a few of your
questions....

1. Fuel pump - if this 350 of yours is much above
stock (especially if you want to race it), you'll want
to run a decent aftermarket electric fuel pump. Many
here in the club run an aftermarket pump in
conjunction w/ their stock pump and sock in the tank. You can
get one at practically any parts store - I haven't
seen one advertised here in the club unless I missed
it.

2. Starter - If you run the stock V8 Monza starter,
be sure and shield it from the heat. From what I've
read in the posts, about 90% of the V8 HBody owners
out there have suffered from heat soak. Wrap it w/ a
good header wrap insulator, or construct a good metal
shield, or better yet, wire up a remote solenoid away
from all the heat. You can still get V8 Monza starters
at the auto stores - just specify "automatic" or
"stick" when getting one.

3. Radiator - this one
is a HOT topic! *smile* If you check this club
regularly, you'll see tons of posts on overheating problems,
so I'll keep this one short for fear of "over
informing" you. A 3-core minimum is needed - you can get a
stock V8 Monza rad, or buy some aftermarket ones that
are the same dimensions. My preference is Griffin
aluminum rads. But there are a few in this club who have
used 3 core rads out of Cutlass's, and even Honda's
just fine. There are lots that will work. Battling
overheating is not just a radiator solution though - it's the
whole package of radiator, fan, shroud, thermostat,
electric fans, air dam, air vents, etc. etc. that combat
this common problem sufficiently.

4. 5 lug
conversion - a few choices here. If you want to keep the
stock spindles, you can get ready-made Monza/Vega 5 lug
rotors from Dave's Vega Village. Or, you could just take
a new set of Monza rotors to a local machine shop
and they'll redrill them for you (only cost me $60
for the pair, but then you have the cost of new
rotors too) Or, you can switch to an S10 spindle and
rotor combo (probably the best way to go).

Well,
that's probably enough for now... If you want specifics
on anything I've briefly mentioned here, just post
your question. You've got the best brain-trust of
HBody owners out there to help you!...

Ken

hey good luck on the project. if you find a
source of tailights for your coupe let everyone know
cause there damm rare. one of a couple reasons im
letting go of my monza coupe project is the
unavailability tailights.

Thanks for the welcome and info.

BTW Right
now I'm in NC, but next month
I'm moving to DC. I
don't know yet if
I can take the Monza project with
me.
If not, it'll be in storage for about a
year
until I find a place to live and work on the
car
(an apartment is not the ideal home
for a car nut
but it might be all I can get
for now).

I'm new to this club... Don't own a Vega now but
owned 3 between 1975-1982. Last & best was a '73 GT
Wagon. It died in an accident in '83. I've never liked a
car as much as that one and would love to replace it
someday...

Hi, it,s nice to know there are people out there
that know your saying monza, not mazda when you tell
them what kind of car you have! Our car is a 78 with
welded in framerails, 8pt. bar,& tubs. Floorwork & tubs
were done in metal to keep the rear structurally sound
so We can pro street it without worrying about
dinging aluminum panels. Drivetrain is a 355ci, turbo350
w/brake,& a narrowed 10 bolt w/spool& 33spline axles. Best
et to date is 6.90@97.33mph, 1/8 mile. I,ll send
pics when I get a scanner. Great club!

I'm a new member, 79 starfire firenza, with 2
questions.
Are the alignment specs the same for a 77 and a
79?
What can be rattling in the front end? The alignment
shop says everything( balljoints, steering, swaybar,
shocks) looks tight.
Thanks

One possibility, if you've checked all steering
linkage and found it to be tight, is the caliper pin
bushings may be worn. The front calipers are each held on
by two pins and bushings w/ small C-clips to keep
them from falling out. I've expermented with this in
years past and found that even with new pins and
bushings I had a rattle, just not as bad. It was then that
I built up the area where the pins slide in through
the spindle itself with some JB Weld and that did the
trick. The longer I let the rattle go on, the more it
wore out the area on the spindle where the caliper and
pins attach.

That's just one of a number of
possibilities. Hope this helps.

Btw, got any pics of your
Firenza?... we don't have too many Firenza owners in this
club... would love to see it.

Ken
