Body question, hope this is the right place

Postby 75TC » Wed Oct 03, 2007 7:00 am

I didn't really see a "body section" so I hope it is ok to post here.

I was looking around and was able to find some rear fiberglass fenders for my monza.

So my question is, is it possible to mold fiberglass into steel somehow and still have it retain durability?

Thanks for any and all help guys.

p.s. I noticed that they also have IMSA fenders and stuff for the fastbacks and those are also fiberglass which leads me to believe that this can be done.

p.s.s. Also I will find a very good body person to do the work for me as I am no good with body work yet (going to take a college program for that and paint and such) so I just wanted to know if it is doable I don't need directions lol.

i think 3m makes an epoxe its called structal adhesive. i used it on the extra long rear wheel well openings that harwood makes. never had any problems with them cracking off. that stuff is a one shot deal make shure everthing fits perfect before you mix the stuff up and use it.

So is this kind of like a bondo type of thing?

no its epoxy . you use it to mount the fiberglass to the metal. if you use bondo to mount the fiberglass to the metal it will not stay to long. what i did was to make the fiberglass part fit pefrect . then i sanded the metal with 20grit , and rough up the fiberglass .then i drilled holes for pop rivits. then you mix and smear the epoxy on the metal and fiberglass and mount on the car with the pop rivits. after it hardens you can drill out the rivets and use more epoxy to fill in those holes. then a little body work to blend and your done . i used more epoxy to blend it was a pain but worth it.

If the 3M stuff is anything like Fusor (sold at NAPA) it's good stuff. http://www.lord.com/tabid/3398/Default.aspx
