Torque Arm Suspension Driveshaft Safety Loop

Postby HI WINDING MONZA » Thu Dec 13, 2007 11:26 am

What is everyone using? A 3rd Gen. F-body kit for the torque arm suspension or a universal kit? Or homemade? Doug in AZ 8)

Could you use a loop mounted to the torque arm?

I have mine bolted to the torque arm. Not sure if it's a 100% NHRA legal but it works.

That's what I was wondering, if it would be NHRA legal. If the loop was mounted to the torque arm it would move with the driveshaft. I haven't seen the F-body kits, are they mounted on the torque arm? I'll have to check them out. I'm not worried about NHRA legal but I'd like to use a loop just for my own piece of mind.

They have a "double loop" set up ( one to clear the arm too) and bolts under the floorboards.

Lakewood Part # 18020 82-92 F-Body

Summit # LAK 18020 $ 35.99

'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

Matt, the rules state that it has to be a complete loop, 1/4 " thick- two inch wide steel or 7/8" .065 size tubing , and mounted securely within 6 inches back from the center of the front u- joint. Doug in Az 8)

All of the stuff that Spohn sells meets NHRA requirements, I think.

I haven't used Spohn products before, but I have never had an issue with simalure loop on larger cars, I have one on my 69 Firebird that mounts to the trans crossemeber and does not look nearly as beefy as the Spohn one, and it always passes tech.

I got Summit # SUM-G7900 , the loop fits over both the torque arm and the driveshaft but the bolts stick out a little too far and hit each side of the tunnel.

Smaller bolts would fix that problem for an easier install , but since its a race car, I just hammered it into place. It sits right in front of where the e-brake starts.

I had to " jack " up the ends so I could bolt them to the floor. Drill 4 holes, bolt the ends to the floorboards, and done!
