7.5" C-clip eliminator kit?

Postby Gen try1 » Mon Sep 08, 2008 11:26 am

Does anyone make a C-clip eliminator kit for a 7.5" rear in a '77 Monza or is there a kit that is close that can be modified to work?
This is for a Bonneville racer so it doesn't need a 9" Ford, the factory rear will be fine.
Thanks,
Gentry

I see where Strange, Moser etc... offer one for the GM 7.5" When I get home from work today I'll measure the brake flange and see if its the same as this drawing. I have a housing apart so it will be easy to check. Brian

A long time ago I bought a Strange C-clip eliminator kit for my 7.5. At the time I don't think it was specific to the Monza unit, and it moved the brake drum and spline engagement out quite a bit. Hopefully that has changed (doubt it). I ended up disassembling the Strange unit and facing the aluminum pieces on the lathe as much as safely possible. When done I think it moved the brake drum out less than a quarter inch, and the spline engagement was good. I just pulled the 7.5 out of my car a few years ago. For anyone reading this that is not shooting for Bonneville, the 7.5 setup, with 3.42 gears (turned down pinion) and an Auburn diff was running 1.6x sixty foot times and 11.5 seconds at 120 MPH with 235/60/15 BFG drag radials on Center Line 4-lug rims. Note that if you ever intend to use an Auburn unit with good tires get the Pro series. I galled the standard unit pretty bad, but I was able to get good life out of it by adding the Pro springs afterward.

The rear is readily accessible for pictures should you need some external shots of the C-clip eliminator or drum contact area.

GizmoN sounds like you made it work! I just measured the H brake flange and it matches the brake flange drawing I posted ( I knew there was a reason I kept it).

I don't know if this idea would help (maybe lesson the fab work involved) but would the longer S10 4X4 axles be an advantage. I know there is still the brake issue but I think you would gain an 1" for each axle. 5 lugs is good too. Brian

Brian, are you thinking the 4X4 axles with the C-clip elim would work out better than the 2WD axles? Sounds to me like that's what you are thinkging/asking. You might be on to something.

Correction on the C-clip eliminator kit. I had a brain fart. Went back and checked my records. I modified a Summers Brothers 409015 kit, and it was back in 1987! Can't find it on their website, but the website does not seem to have specifics on their parts anyway. If it still exists, it is probably the same as everyone elses. If you're lucky maybe the Strange or Moser kit is actually for the H-body 7.5"? That would be a shocker.

Yes but then you have the brakes to work out. I don't know which would be easier.

Yes it would. I would like to see what Gentry ends up doing plus his car. Sounds like another cool H body project. Brian

I saw this SkyHawk on Cardomain this weekend. I guess it runs a sbc with Dart 10 degree Buick heads. So what kind of engine is it? :D I guess in the early 80's Dart copied the Buick Stage 2 V6 heads and made the "Buick" head for the sbc. The owner calls it the worlds fastest SkyHawk and I guess he has the record in D Gass Coupe at 222.08 mph racing at Bonneville. I thought maybe it was turbo charged from the hole in the front fender but I haven't heard back from the owner. When the owner said it was a 290ci Chevy with Buick heads I thought maybe it was a V6... Brian
