Strengthening the back half

Postby Fastmax32168 » Wed Dec 03, 2008 8:20 pm

I have sub frame connectors made that run along the rails and tie into the rear LCA mounts. I came off of the connectors with some braces under the front subframe. I dont want to back half my car, but am wondering while I am under here fabbing, what sort of bracing could be added in the rear of the car that would effectively add some strength where needed?
Thanks

recently a few of the guys were discussing this same thing you are asking. one good thing to do is put a crossmember from side to sie frame rail around the tranny crossmember(maybe even tie it into the tranny crosssmember if you can for added strength, and one back by the rear end., you can make them or buy them already bent for use as crossmembers, with different drop distances to clear the driveshaft.. these will also be like a driveshaft loop. also form these you can go out with outrigger and steel plates to floor pan areas, and weld them to floor or bolt in with a mathcing flat plate under the carpeting on the inside of car, then you wont see them and a 3/16 or 1/4 inch plate will be flat enough so it wont bwe seen under the carpet. this should tie in your whole floor pan and subframe system good luck chevy art PS the factory made crossmembers can be bought either as 2x3 or tublar(around 1 5/8)

Art, Thanks for the post. I had been planning to do something with crossbracing and that info helps. I was thinking more about the rear subframe and the area above and behind the axle. Is it not necessary to really brace up that area? Or is there something beneficial could be done there?
Thanks

The only thing back there is the weight of the body,no need to strengthen it.

That trailing arm mount is pretty weak but your connectors should take care of adding strength to it. If you wanted to add more gusseting that area is where it's the worst.

I'm going to run 1 1/4 dom 120 gage down both rockers with cross bars at the trans cross member and at the rear, right in front the axle, I think I can bend it with a conduit bender and tuck it up to the floor pans and tie it in front to back? still not sure about a roll cage,i 'm not going to have more than 500hp at the wheels so I'm not sure it's needed??
