My mini tub job

Postby speedphreake » Wed May 27, 2009 5:26 pm

Well, I did it. I cut up a perfectly good rust free car to mini tub it. Scariest day I've had in a long time. lol I'm running 26x10 slicks, they stick out 1 1/2" past the lip of the wheel well on a 9" wheel. My car is now covered in rubber from 2 burnouts last weekend. My goal is to run a 275/60/15. I'm moving the wheel well in 2" to get it to fit with room to spare and be totally inside the wheelwell.

I can now fit the tire completely inside the wheel well with room to space. Now I just need to piece it all back together.

Can't wait to see you finish up. I will like to see pics of the Suspension being moved. Are you staying 4 Link?

Good luck Mark

I've been putting this off for awhile cuz I was scared to cut into it, today I decided just to jump in with both feet.

Yes, staying 4 link. I'm using the insides of the stock mounting points on the body. This way I can still run the car at "stock suspension" class races. I think my biggest suspension issue is moving the springs. I've got it figured out and it should come out pretty good, I hope. lol

I'm trying to keep the back seat and still be able to fold it down. It looks like bottom will squeeze back in with no mods. The top part will be the issue. Once I finish one side of the minitub I'm going to test fit the seat and see how bad it will be.

Looking good. I know what you mean about hesitating on cutting a rust free body. I went through the same thing before I cut my Starfire but I always liked the pro street look. A sawsall is one of the best investments I've made, Told my wife I could use it to trim the branch on the trees with it too.
Keep up the good work and more pictures.

Good start!

I love mini-tubbed cars.... I have always wanted to do this to a Dart or Duster. years ago Direct Connection sold a srping relocation kit (leaf spring) that was used to move the spring so the cars could be mini-tubbed.

Your idea to utilize the inside edge of the stock lower control arm mounting points reminded me of the leaf spring relocation kits , that's what they did.

I already love your car, this will just make it better!

Wow thats alot of work to tuck a 26" tire. I'm lazy I would just stick a 9" tire under it. :D Or mini tub it for a 28x10.
