Vega roll cage kit

Postby LL8 Vega GT » Wed Sep 15, 2010 11:22 am

Looking at the 12pt kit for a race car http://www.jegs.com/i/Jegster/550/940005K/10002/-1 Anybody used this kit? if so did you like it?

I also see that CE sells a kit as well, looks similar http://www.jegs.com/i/Competition+Engin ... A/10002/-1

Any feedback would be appreciated.

the c/e kit is what I used in my latest car, fits pretty nice and didnt have to do much to get it to go in the first time,no problems for me.

I didnt put in the side bars or rear crossbar because its a street car, not a drag car, but you have to order the extra kit to get those parts.

Thanks for the reply, your cage turned out really nice. Did you have to modify the bends in the main hoop, halo, or windshiled bars to get it to fit like that? I do not have a tube bender so i am hoping it will fit good enough for a drag car. I am removing the cage i started with, it was built back before the wall thickness regulation changed for NHRA, so if it is going to run under 10s it will need a cage that will certify. Luckily i did not finsish weld it, just some tack welds.

no, didnt have to bend anything. just take the time to open up the "pre notched" ends to get the angle and quality of the fit to your liking. With any cage kit youll almost always have to squeeze the main hopp to make it fit perfect, I just use a rachet binder and do it before you put it in the car, tweak it a good inch inward, release and trial fit, they are always sprung out about an inch, and I have used c/e,alston and chassis eng. cages in various cars, always had to tweak the main hoop to make the sides square. just take your time and youll have no problems.

i'm building a 75' wagon for a guy now he bought a jegs kit before he got ahold of me. can't say i'm impressed the main hoop was 2" to wide atleast. that was about as far as i got with the cage kit so far i got the 4 link and front crossmember in the 4 link isn't much better than the main hoop but have to say for being jegs stuff the front cross member isn't to bad.

i ended up bending a new main hoop for the car and it fit's much better. i'll have to see what the owner of the car wants to do with the old hoop.

wondering why you wouldn't go to a local chassis shop to have a cage bent up wouldn't be much if any more (or shouldn't be anyway!!) once you add freight to the cost of the cage kit they aren't that cheap IMO.

Overkill,
thanks for the heads up. I am going to buy a kit because i can pick them up from jegs no shipping, next time i am there i want to pick up the CE 12 pt cage.... i can get it for 185$, pretty sure cant have one bent for that including material, so i will have to work with less than perfect kit i guess, hope the CE is a little better, but i agree, a custom fit is always better

I looked at your site, can you please come to my house for a couple weeks LOL, very nice work.
I have to ask about the double anti roll bar, how does this design work? I did not see a pick. And the fixture you have for headers, do you run shielding gas thru it?

yea it would be hard to get a cage bent for $185 but if your stuck paying shipping on one check a local chassis shop you may be surprised. i charge $25 a bend plus material for custom bends.

thanks for the compliments problem with comming to your house is getting my shop there (unless you have a full fab shop at your house....lol) yea i need to get some DBL anti roll bar pics up it has 4 arms instead of 2 the main tortion bar has one set of arms then a second tortion tube with bronze bushings slides over that and has a second set of arms. there are 4 links to the rearend....it real real stiff.

the header fixture was for a set of LS small block chevy headers i built out of stainless and yes i ran argon through them while welding it works great.

So I'm nearing the point to where I need to think about this now. So I'm at 12.41 now, low 12's are possible with a tune. Throw a 400 in there, I'm easily at 11.5. Then do some tuning and such, and I'm in the low 11's.

Given the break downs, I need a rollbar at 11.5, and a cage at 11.0. Guess I need to plan for a rollcage, especially if I throw nitrous in the mix.
