front springs,,round and round we go,,

Postby 2lucke4u » Tue Sep 19, 2006 10:44 am

Hi Guys
Need some solid input here,,gettting two sides from this at the track,,need results not guessing,,any one with experience need apply,,car now has been tuned down to 11.80's,the front end has no travel with the new v-8 springs,we cut 1 1/4 coils and lowered the front 2 inches,,you CANNOT push the front down more than a couple of inches by standing on the bumper,it has 90/10 shocks. and at the track on film it only comes up about 5 inches before it lifts the wheels about 6 inches,,my 60ft times suck at 1.680,
OK,,,Here are the two sides,,
one side says best senario is what i have as the car transfers right now as the front does not have to rise to come to full extension and plant the wheels,,
side two says just the oppisite that the car will run quicker 60ft times and et if the front is allowed to rise with stored energy of lighter springs. and will pull the fronts higher on the launch. and rear back throwing the weight on the rear tires,,
there are an equal amount on each side with opposing views,,
LETS GET SOME INPUT ON THIS,,,I HAVE ORDERED SPRINGS
IF it will make a differance in the last days of racing this year, I WILL DO IT,,
Thanks Charles

just remember you want the car to go foward not up . you want the least amount of up travel to give you the best traction

1978 Chevrolet Monza Wagon

......

Postby rustorbust » Wed Sep 20, 2006 2:43 am

When I first put my car together I found a v8 monza and got the lower control arms and springs. I put them in the car and was very disapointed in how the worked. It felt like a covered wagon. I put the original control arms and springs back in the car and went to Pep boys and bought those rubber coil spring helpers. I put 2 in each spring. I have had them in the car for over a year now and they work excellent. It sits low in the front which i feel gives it a awsome weight transfer the car will do wheels up 1.47 60fts on a 8" tires. I can bounce on the front of the car and the headers wont hit the ground. Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the input,,I'm leaning your way big time,,my first monza had 4cyl springs and would hop the front end off the ground in 1st gear by slapping the pedal to the floor a few times at a slow roll,,at the time we did not race and just thought it was cool,,of course it was a 4sp with a 4.11 gear and mickeys on the back,,
the comments from the track about the car just driving away and forgetting to transfer first are getting old, still at 11.80 it drives away fast i tell them,,
do you think I will see a mph and et improvment with all the work?? or just et change?

springs,,now there in,,can't wait to try them,,

Postby 2lucke4u » Tue Sep 26, 2006 3:53 pm

Here's the deal,,put new v-8 springs in and the car was as stiff as a board on the front and at the track would only lift a little and bring the tires off,,no weight being transfered to the back tires,,pulled the springs and replaced with well worn 6cylinder springs,,so far I like it ,,,I can bounce the front a little instead of not at all,,waiting to hit the track to see what happens,,results will tell ,,keep you posted

front springs

Postby danfigg » Tue Sep 26, 2006 9:29 pm

Thanks for some more intel. Just another question. Front V6 spring from a Monza are not available to me right now. I can get my hands on some S10 4 and 6 cylinder springs. Will they fit on the Monza front and will they work as far as drag race application. I can also get other V-6 springs such as camaro will that work------------Danny

Don't know about s-10 springs,,but I have heard the camaro and firebird 6 cylinder springs work,,they just put the pictures of the car in action on www.magic-photos.com page 3 #3343,page 4 #3376, they take good pictures,,you can see the wheels off in both, thats with the stiff springs on the front,,it comes up only a couple of inches the then wheels follow, not enough rise to transfer to the rear, hence the lousy 1.680 60ft times, no test and tunes near us untill next week,,we were running 9.5psi of pressure in the slicks,,I don't like it that low but it drove good all the way to the traps,,at 12.5psi we spun out to the 60ft and were running 1.750 60ft, I CAN'T WAIT TO TEST THIS CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Front springs

Postby danfigg » Fri Sep 29, 2006 7:52 pm

OK here is my deal, I finally had time to look under my Monza only to find that there is some type of claps on the front springs. They use 2 bolts and squeeze the 2 lower coils of the springs together. If I remove these clamps, I am sure the front will rise up alittle. Does any one know if this will help my front end rise up at launch and loosen up the front end or will this hurt my launch. I dont have time to experiment as Oct 8 is coming soon (Island Dragway). I also have rubber spacers on the rear spring that are between the coils that I plan on removing as well.I also plan on getting the correct spacers from summit ------------------------Danny

Yes remove the fronts for sure to loosen up that front end,,think of it like a horse rearing up,,all the weight ends up on his back legs,,my car is like a horse sliding on mud,the fronts go up a little then the rears slip,,leave the helpers in the passenger side rear spring and remove the other if the car will sit level enough, reason is, the car wants to pull up the driver side front wheel more than the passenger side,,its an optical illusion,,,,the right rear is being pushed down by the rotational force of the rear gears, causing the kitty corner tire to lift,,hope the illustrations make it easy to understand ,with these changes I will guarantee a drop in et,,,,well,,,sort of,,good luck

Ok I removed those things that crush the coils together in the front of my monza mirage. What a nightmare. I got them off without losing any fingers. That is dangerous. Why would any one use that technique is beyond me. I can push down on the front know. It sits about an inch higher which is no big deal to me. I will get it on flat land and get a better view when I take it for a test run. It is raining here in NY. Thanks for the intel. -----------Danny

You made it through that one the easy way,,way better than pulling the front suspension apart,,let us know the differance it makes at the track,,

I drove it and it drove a little softer in the front. It sits about an inch higher. I tried to launch it but it just spun the tires. I think I am just going to have to try it at the track on Sunday oct 8. Thanks for your info Charles. --------------------Danny

Postby danfigg » Mon Oct 02, 2006 8:13 pm

Ok I removed the rear rubber helpers. Why they are there I dont know. They were loose between the springs. I used a pair of visegrips and twisted them and they came out. Of course I had the car jacked up. With the weight of the car on them they still were a little loose. Now here is my question. Should I put the 90/10 shocks with these springs. I am assuming they are stock V8 springs, or should I use the90/10 shocks with the drag race springs I have them both. What is the benifit with the rear if the front is a stock V8 spring and some type of performance shock in the front. I couldnt read the brand but they are for handling. I chose to drag race so im not worried about handling. ----Danny

the whole deal on the 90/10 shocks on the front is to hold the front up on the launch,,the 90 part is the resistance to the front end coming back down,,my new ones will hold the front up untill I get to the pits and help it down,,what I mean is that after the launch it takes time or motion for the car to come back to normal height,,that keeps it transfered thru your whole run,,we can push the car down the last inch in the pits,,the it sits normal,,remember bag or helper in passenger rear shock to avoid twisting on the launch,,the twisting is very evident in the pictures of my car leaving at cordova that I posted on the site,,the drivers rear tire has 5 inches clearance over it and the passenger side about 2 inches,,I think we have a handle on the problem though,,
