S-10 Rear 5 Lug/Gear/Brake Swap:

Here is what I used and have no problem with the
drums rubbing the backing plates or the brake shoes
running out of square in the drum. First, I harvested a
complete 7.5" Differential from a local wrecker out of a
1976 Pontiac Sunbird. I then found a 1988 S-10 4X4
with a fine 3.73 Positraction Differential. I
installed the complete Ring/Pinon/Carrier/Yoke into the
1976 Sunbird Housing using the Timken #16143/16283
Bearing/Race and the National #PN8610 Seal. I left the stock
Sunbird Brakes/Backing Plates on the rearend (9x2") and
installed 1982 S-10 4X2 Axles. I then used 1980 Cheverolet
Malibu Aluminum Rear Brake Drums (Part #1255496) to
complete the package. The result was no rubbing of backing
plate and drum. I think this is due to a deeper recess
in the Aluminum Drum as opposed to the Cast Iron
Unit. I hope this information is helpful...Robert
