Hello. just got in from wrenching on My monza. I
noticed that the headers are touching the back of my
starter. I have no idea what kind of headers these are.
The tubes for the front and rear ports come off the
collectors. Does anyone know what kind of headers these are?
I tried to get a smaller starter on from another
v-8 but the end still hits. DAMMIT!! I am thinking
there might be a heat soak problem from the contact.
Any thoughts?
I'm thinking Hammer mechanics and
maybe a shield.

I used a 153 tooth flywheel and a high torque
mini starter from Summit Racing and now have tons of
clearance and no heat soak problems. I ran into the same
problem on my '72 Vega. I did have to notch the area of
frame/inner fender next to the starter for it to fit, mini
and standard starter. Hope this helps, it cured my
clearence and heat soak problems.

Hey Nick, you're experiencing the same problem
that probably 90% of V8 Hbody owners have
experienced... heat soak! The most inexpensive way to deal with
the problem, if a High Torque Mini Starter is out of
your budget, is "header wrap" and a homemade (or
borrowed) heatsheild. I used both on my Hooker Super Comp
headers and stock (large) starter and my heat soak
problems went away.

Note: The only "disadvantage"
I experienced by doing this was that my car (like
all V8 Hbodies) was known to "bottom out" often, and
my headers would rub the ground, thus eventually
wearing through the header wrap, reducing it to threads.
So I occasionally had to rewrap the headers after
several months, but other than that, they worked
sufficiently.

i used a 164 tooth flywheel(large)
whit a gear
reduction starter
it fits whit lots of clearance
one
alternative is to use a
starter from a 1988 and up
4.3
s-10 truck (hey you can put the
s-10 brakes on the
car too!!!)
this starter is a permanant magnet
type
much smaller and lots of torque too!!
look in the
album section in the hooker 2129
album you`ll see
how it fits on mine
