Engine Screaming

Well, my 72 Vega (283-V8) finally hit the streets
yesterday. Running pretty good...chirping between first and
second on a regular basis! I need to figure out the best
way to get my RPM'S down though. It has a turbo 350
and the stock rear end for an auto trans. When
driving about 50MPH, the engine is SCREAMING...and yes,
it's in 3rd! I have the stock tire sizes.....about the
size of a glazed donut. Will bigger tires fix this? Or
am I looking at a different rear end? Which rears
would work? I would like to be able to drive about 65
on the freeway.

Bigger tires would help by lowering the rear axle ratio(theres a formula for that somewhere). what is screaming? are you sure the trans isn't slipping in 3rd?

I suggest you go to a Performance Car Store, like
Summit or call them. They have all the calculations on
how to figure gears. They will want to no Engine
size, Cam size, tire size and Transmission. They really
helped me. I have a 1976 Vega wagon 350/T350 and a Chevy
10 bolt, my problem was not top end speed but
getting there took forever I had 2.41 gears, I just
ordered 3.73 gears and added some 25 inch 60 series
tires, based on the numbers they gave me it should do
the trick. GOOD LUCK

If its any easier for you, I have 25" tall
tires and 3;42 gears and my tach reads about
3000 RPM's at 65 MPH. FYI

I have a formula that states for every 1 inch you
go up in tire size you raise your gearing a 10th ,
for example if you have a 3.41:1 rear and you put a
tire 3 inches taller than what you have now your gear
would work out to be equivilant to 3.11:1 . I hope this
helps you out and it is way cheaper than a new rear
gear !!!
