WOW...Rear end test?

Thanks for all the input! I am trying to figure
out what rear I have.....I found some info on the net
(65 page info printout!) on how to count the tire
spins with the drive shaft......I made a mark on my
drive shaft, made a mark on my tire...now I was under
the assumption that 1 turn of the drive shaft would
get me a couple turns of the wheel...Well....with one
tire jacked up, it took
1 and 3/4 turn of the
drive shaft to make the tire go around ONCE.......Any
input???? Like I mentioned before, I can only do about 45
MPH in 3rd to keep the engine from overrevving....Any
input would help nicely. Maybe I'm just
retarded.
Chris

WOW...Rear end test?

Chris,

If you only jacked up one tire in
the rear, you are probably seeing the "gear
splitting" effect of the open differential. Try this way
instead: Jack up the rear of the car and put it on
jackstands (safety first!). Mark one tire and mark the
driveshaft. Put the trans in neutral and turn the driveshaft
by hand. Count the number of turns on the driveshaft
it takes to make the tire rotate once. . .this is
your gear ratio. i.e. if the driveshaft turns 3.73
times for each rotation of the tire, you have a 3.73
gear.

Hope this helps,

Andrew

Chris, the procedure you used is fine, just
double the results to get a final ratio of 3.50:1 which
is what I belive you have based on the process you
described. You see, since only one tire was jacked up, the
other being not able to turn causes the spider gears to
rotate within the case. This results in the total turns
required to turn both tires to be halved since it only
turns one tire. So, your 1 3/4 turns would become 3 1/2
turns or a 3.50:1 ratio.

Good Luck,
Bob

Bob,
I believe you are "Right On" with how to
calculate the ratio with one wheel on the ground. The only
thing is the accuracy of 1 3/4 turns. Is it 1.75(3.50)
or 1.71(3.42)?? If you mark the tire, and also the
driveshaft, and count the turns on the shaft until the wheel
goes around 20 times, this increases the accuracy of
the check by 10. Divide the results by 10. Or move
the decimal point over 1 place. (34.2 turns would be
a 3.42, 35 turns would be a 3.50, etc.) What do you
think????

Thanx, Mike

I do think that's what I have (I only eyeballed
it, so it could be 3.42), so now I am on the quest to
get the 2.73 rear end...Thnanks a lot guys, all the
help has been invaluable! Love the site
Bob!

Would trade ya a set of 2.29's for a set of 3.42's!
