700R4 Torque Arm Mounting

I read way back in the early posts on the HBOA
site about different ways to mount a torque arm when
transplanting a 700R4. The three recommended ways basically
were: 1. Shorten the torque arm, and attach it to the
H-body TH 350 tail housing using the stock mount, 2.
Fabricate a bracket out of 1/4 inch steel plate and mount
the standard length torque arm to the transmission
crossmember, and 3. Fabricate a bracket to mount on the
tailshaft and mount the torque arm to the new bracket
without shortening it. Since the primary reason the
torque arm was installed is to control wheel hop, does
it matter if it is maintained at stock length and
mounted to the frame or crossmember, or should it be
mounted to the transmission? Will shortening the torque
arm and using the stock tail housing adversely affect
the rear suspension geometry and cause problems? Like
to hear what y'all think would work
best!

Regards,
Dave

i`m using the th-350 tail housing on my

th-700 and so far i din`t have any problem
whit
wheel hoop or other geometry problem.

BTW when
using the tail housing to mount
the torque arm use a
GOOD trans mount
(like those sold by Energy
Supension)

The torque arm trys to push the trans up
in
the car regular mount don`t have an interlocking
feature so sometimes they
break

700R4 Torque Arm Mounting

tex, I don't know what sort of engine you are
running, but having done a similar swap let me make a
suggestion. The 200-4R is a much better choice of a tranny
for you then the 700-R4. Why? You ask, here are some
reasons. 1. The 700 will take some pounding on the tunnel
to make it fit, the 200 fits perfectly. 2. The 700
weighs considerably more than the 200, although that may
not be a consideration. 3. Take a look at the gear
ratios for the two trannies in question. The step from
1st to 2nd on the 200 is much tighter than the 1-2
shift in the 700 so you lose less RPM. 4. Durability
isn't a question as the 200 was in the Grand National,
and High Pref Pontiac is running one behind a mildly
built 455 in a GTO. Granted it is best if you have a
200 gone through and some preformance parts put in in
place of the stock parts, but the 200 in mine is
working beautifully after several years of abuse. As to
the mounting of mine, I not only had the torque plate
shortened, but the cross member was moved back about two
inches to line up with the transmission mount and I had
a special bracket made from 1/4" plate to actually
mount the torque plate to. As I stated earlier, I have
been running this combo behind a mildly worked 6 for
several years and never had it break a sweat. The 200 is
also cheaper to find and build over big brother 700
and many came with universal bolt patterns to allow
bolt up of any GM engine. Hope this helps, and if you
have any questions on the subject, drop me a line.

700R4 Torque Arm Mounting

John,

No doubt you know a bunch more on
this subject than I do, but the 700R4 is a done deal
because I found a recently rebuilt 30 spline trans from a
wrecked Suburban and am getting it pretty cheap for an
overdrive trans with lockup. It should fit in my '76 pretty
well because my car has the bigger trans tunnel like
the Monza. Since I'm not building the car for the
strip (although it may see a couple of passes a year)
the ratios aren't a big concern. The car will
hopefully be a daily driver. The rest of your mounting tips
are "dead balls" accurate from what I've been able to
figure out. Thanks for the info and if you have any more
ideas on mounting please keep them coming!

Dave
