305 h.o heads or cammel back heads

That depends. I have heard from a reputable head
guy (that sounds weird) that the 305s make great
heads as they have lots of extra material for porting.
They also have 56-58cc chamber volumes which really
ups your static compression. However, I doubt they
can outflow, for the money, a good set of early
performance cast iron heads, or "camel humps" as sometimes
referred to.

In stock form the camel humps
heads are
better
BUT...
In 305 ho heads (416 castings)
you can add
larger (1.94) valves
when doing this you have to
unshroud
the chambers and you`ll end up whit
a
chamber volume around 68 cc`s

When street ported
those heads should
flow well whit a cam of around
.480 of lift

Now we can talk of ported
heads...

both heads can be ported to flow almost the same
numbers... it`s up to you.....
305 heads have the
accesories bolt holes..
camel humps heads need to have
them drilled
and machined.... ( most shop can do
this)

305 heads are lightweight castings (thin)

camel heads are heavy casting

So if you want
to go whit stock heads
go whit drilled camel
hump heads...

Be aware.......
if your
heads need lots of parts to be in good
condition
it might be cheaper to buy a set of dart S/R or
sportsman heads

305 h.o heads or cammel back heads

The issue would be one of intended application.
The smaller valve sizes will have little if any ill
effect on a healthy street engine. However, keep in mind
the 305 heads are lightweight castings that are prone
to cracking if overheated. Several piston
manufacturers make a dish piston for the 350 that enables the
use of the more plentiful 305 cylinder heads. Also
keep in mind the array of aftermarket heads now
available far surpass the 461/462/292 heads in airflow
capability. I hope this is helpful...Robert

Valves can be oversized, but unless you port the
runners to match it's useless. If you have to use a set
of GM castings and can't afford the high dollar
aluminum vette heads, choose the 886 castings.

I
would however caution you, after you spend all the $$
to get these up to spec, you could've had a set of
brand new SR Torquers for the same price and outflow
whatever you built from a 305 casting.
