Voltage and tires

I have looked in four different books concerning
GM alternator voltage output - these books tell you
how to rebuild an alternator, but no mention of
voltage - mine is putting out at least 15 volts and I
think it is a little too much. Also, have 10 year old
tires with more tread left, but I have to believe 10
years is getting kind of old for a tire - have never
seen any info about tire aging.

Bill,
Not sure about the volts, think it
should be about 13 volts. But as far as the tires go as
long as they do not have age cracks they should be ok.
Maybe not for runs above a 100, but for normal driving,
that is if any of us drive normal, they should be
ok.

Dick

output voltage (at the battery)
with a FULLY
charged battery
should be no more then 14.3
volts

if you have more then that your
voltage
regulator is bad

10 years old tires....

Well,
the rubber will be very hard
(less traction
and grip)
check also if they have cracks
in
them (between treads and on side walls

Voltage and tires

I had wondered about the voltage myself and while
looking through my 75 monza service manual there are
references in the electrical troubleshooting section that
states the voltage should be between 12.5 and 15.5
volts. Seems like a pretty big range to me but I have a
volt meter on my car and after rebuilding my
alternator, including a new voltage regulator, I have about
15 volts according to my in dash VDO gauge. Haven't
had any problem.

test it with a multy meter. 14.3 is what you are looking for. but 15 would never cause a problem
