Alternative to stock V8 mounts?

I was reading on the h-body.org faq about V8
mount kits. It says there that Don Hardy mounts are
side mount like factory monza V8 mounts. Has anyone
used these. is this true? I'm looking to build a tpi
vega and want to use as much factory stuff as
possible. not necessarily vega/monza, but i'll be using
stock fbody exhaust (let me know how involved this is)
and other factory stuff where possible/reasonable.
i'd love to go with a factory mount, but i'd have to
buy a whole monza to get a reasonable deal on a set
that would likely be worn out. not to mention, i'd
feel bad taking the good parts from a car that could
use them. if the Don Hardy pieces put the engine in a
nearly stock position i'd probably use them. any help
would be appreciated. thanks
clem

Clem, I've read messages before about Dave's Vega
Village selling remanufactured stock Monza mounts for
$175. I don't have any experience with this. Maybe
someone else here does. You can find the info under the
vendor section on h-body.org. Also, you can use the
search on h-body.org for the clubs messages by typing in
dave's vega village or just motor mounts. The archived
messages may answer your questions. Although messages with
the words "motor mounts" in them might go into the
thousands. Its got to be the #1 subject disscussed. Tom C

DVV only does an exchange on the V-8 engine mounts.

Thanks Randy

Clem,

I'm doing an LT1 in mine, used stock
V-8 Monza mounts. I wanted to use the stock '96
Camaro manifolds which exit in the right location
without interfering with the motor mounts. Unfortunately,
they interfered with the steering shaft. I could have
dinged the stainless steel shroud, but didn't want to
crack the cast iron part of the manifold. I don't
believe you will have any better luck with older F-body
TPI manifolds. I wound up using Sanderson CC-13HO's.
Still had to raise my steering shaft 1/2" to clear the
left #4 tube. I am writing an article for the web with
pictures of the conversion-- 32 pages so far! If you have
questions, e-mail me at bongo52@attglobal.net

Thanks for the info.
I've been talking to
Robert, "twelve_second_vega" about Don Hardy mounts. he's
got the 'straight skinny' on these. he explained to
me how to modify them so that the steering works
clears both the pan and monza manifolds. I'm not so
worried about the steering i guess. I think if need be i
can ad an extra segment to the shaft, necessitating
another joint and a frame stand for the new shaft
segment. that looks confusing to read it, oops. anyway,
it's what we did with the road racing cars. I don't
know though, i'm just getting all the info i can. I'll
probably end up with stock mounts, at least for comparison
before going with others. Gotta buy a car now, I guess
:)
Thanks for the info
let us/me know how your LT1
project is going! sounds
interesting.

later

The Don Hardy Mounts will only work with Don
Hardy Headers accrding to Don Hardy Inc. They cause the
LH Monza Exhaust Manifold to rub the Steering Shaft.

If you place a 9/16" Spacer between the LH Hardy
Bracket and Rubber Mount, level the engine, then
re-position and re-weld the RH Bracket to maintain this
setting, The LH Monza Exhaust Manifold will clear the
Steering Shaft by 1" and the Center Link will clear the
Monza/Milodon Oil Pan by 3/4".

It was also neccessary
to move, or "offset" the engine to the Right to
align it with the Centerline of the Pinion Stem. The
drawback to this approach in an early (1971-73) Vega is
Transmission Tunnel Interference. But, I had a problem with
this before raising the engine.

My soloution
was to trim out a crescent-shaped piece of material
from the Tunnel and have a Panel Beater fabricate a
new one from sheet steel. This is vastly superior to
Don Hardy's recommendation of, "Heat Pitman Arm and
Idler Arm and bend away from the oil pan." NO
Way.

I am publishing a website that will go through
this conversion in every detail with photos and
written text. I will post the link soon.

Happy
Hoildays...Robert
