Replacing heater Core-Need Help!

Anyone have any experience changing out a heater
core on a Vega? I have a 77 with air conditioning, all
stock, and need to pull the old one out. I haven't seen
it yet, but coolant was leaking from behind the
front right wheel and the hoses leading into the fire
panel looked fine, which leads me to believe it's the
heater core or the hose connections to it. My brother
told me it's a beast of a job and a lot of the work
has to be done from the interior. I've never done it,
so any advice would be helpful. How long will it
take? Will I need any parts or special tools, etc? I've
already got a spare heater core. Thanks.

your brother is right, it is a tough job. To
change it you will basically have to take the whole
assembly out from under the dash to get to it. If you have
access to a shop manual it will help greatly. If not
take your time and take notes on where everything goes
(ie. vacumn lines to the control doors, wiring to the
relays, etc.) but for the most part it's just an R&R job.

Thanks for the info. I do have a Hayes book I'll
have to look at. I just wanted to get someone's
opinion first and any advice that might be valuable. I'll
take a stab at it and just "follow the directions".
Maybe I'll update ya as to how it went in a few days or
weeks when I decide to tackle it. It's no fun not being
able to drive it. Thanks again!

I have to do the same job on my '76 as part of a
V-8 conversion. Basically it involves pulling the
whole dash and heeater/AC evaporator assembly from the
inside for an A/C car. For a non-A/C car, just pull the
heater box on the firewall. Not looking forward to the
job!

Don't need help. I dodged the bullett. After
looking at it more closely, the bracket holding the lower
lose on the heater core was loose and rusted. The
expansion and contraction was causing the leak and the
rusty bracket. So, all I did was put a new bracket on.
Fixed! It still took me an hour though. There's NO room
to change that bracket if you have air conditioning.
I had to jack the car up, and reach up under the
engine to tighten the bracket. Even then, I had to do it
by "feel". Glad it's over. It beats changing the
core. Good luck taking those hoses off if your Vega has
A/C. It's a task!
