lower control arm body mounting.

Hello all- I was just starting to replace my 75
town coupes rear end w/ a 5 lug along with boxed in
lower control arms. I was removing the bolts that come
into the wheel well when I found cancer covered by
bondo. Not just a thin layer but ALOT! it looks like the
wheel well itself is the only part that is rusted
badly. the rust extends into the mounts for the lower
control arm. thru the rust hole I can see part of the
unibody that extends in the same plane as the part the
lowercontrol arm bolts into in the rear wheel well. Has anyone
repaired this stuff? It looks like there is a couple of
3/16" plated welded in horzantally on the floor/rear
frame. I was thinking of putting a plate ofer the rust
and extending twoard the front of the vehicle for
appx 12-16". Any
thoughts?

-Nick

Don,t know what to tell ya about the rust man,
sounds bad. most of the rust on my car is in the rear.
maybe find a parts car thats rusted out in the back and
cut some of the front out and weld it into yours.
Tell me?? How the hell did you get you lower control
arm bolts out!! mine will not budge
one
millimeter.

Bridman,

If your lower control arm bolts are like mine, I had to torch them out. Took the control arm with it. That was okay as I was swapping in Monza control arms on my Vega.

While it isn't easy, you can cut the bolt on each
side of the control arm bushing with either a Sawzall
or hack saw blade and the replace the bolts. Of
course you will also need new bushings which I assume
you were going to replace anyway. The bolt is
probably rusted to the inner sleeve in the bushing and
what will usually happen is the metal sleeve3 will
break loose from the rubber and you will never get it
out without cutting the bolt. Clyde

I tried the sawzall route, couldn't get the blade in there as it was too tight, no room to move.

Brian & everybody.

There are two ways I
have dealt with the rust-welded bolts & inner sleeves
in the bushings. The first is to use a Oxy-Acetylene
torch to burn a window through the outer bushing shell,
and then burn away most of the rubber of the bushing
to get at the sleeve. Usually all the heat will
loosen the rust, and you can smack the end of the bolt
with a hammer & the bolt will come out. If not you can
turn the bolt/sleeve until the seam in the sleeve is
visable, and use a chisel to split the sleeve open. The
burning rubber is the biggest impediment to doing this.
It is a nasty job, but you can do it in a relatively
short time. You need to be careful not to catch you car
on fire. Have a source of water and a fire
extinguisher at close hand.

The next method is similar
(but far less messy), but you use an air chisel to cut
the outer bushing shell, and you then use the air
chisel and a utility knife to cut the rubber away from
the inner sleeve. Then you do the same thing, turn
the bolt until you see the seam, and use the chisel
to split the sleeve. The bolt will then come out
with a little coaxing (turning and mile
hammering).

Once you have the control arms off the car, you can
collapse the bushing shells and press them
out.

Hope this helps. Works every time for me, and those I
have taught this technique.

Kevin.

By the way that would be MILD hammering, not mile hammering... Damn typos!

Kevin, the problem with this approach and others
is that you assume you can get the nut off the bolt
in order to remove it. I couldn't get the nut off
the bolts! I tried everything. Soaked it continously
in WD-40, use a three-foot breaker bar, an impact
wrench, etc. to no avail. Eventually I had to torch right
through the middle of the bolt/bushing. It was messy.
Fortunately the car is completey dissassembled and there
wasn't much that could catch on fire, but I still had
that fire extinguisher handy.

Brian,

Been there too, but I put the torch
on the nut directly, and heated it cherry red. While
it was still cherry red, I put an impact socket on
it, and used that 3 foot breaker bar you mentioned to
break it loose. As soon as it was loose, I quickly
removed it. (To keep the socket as cool as
possible.)

One tool I almost always find as a required item
during disassembly of any old car is a Oxy-Acetylene
torch set.

Just a thought.

Kevin.

I just finished removing the carpet and seats out
of my monza to find the extent of the rust. It looks
like the drivers side has been repaired all the way up
to the floorboards. I am planning to install
subframe connectors and tie the rear lower control arm
mounts into them. I hope this works!

Nick,
just a bit of idea here...
use 2 X
3 steel tubing, with
two brackets at the rear
to bolt
the rear control arm in it then weld

the 2 X 3 steel tubing in the car i the
same
fashion used by the Alston frame
connectors
it
will solve your rust problem and stiffen
your car
a lot

I'm putting in the alston subframe connectors soon. I plan to create some kind of re-inforcing to tie into the connectors. Hopefully, I'll get pics.

Nick,
Not sure but you might want to

think about it a bit,
i think that when you`ll be
finished
with modifing the Alston frame connector
and
welding in the car that you should
have build your
own frame connectors

but you can (and should)
use the Alston
to get an idea of general
fitment

Just some toughts

Denis

I already bought the subframe connectors. I was planning on installing them before my 5 lugged posi anyway, just not on that much rust/little metal..
