Winter Driving..

Theres have been snowy greasy roads here in
wintery Rochester, for quite some time
now...Although,quite fortunately we've only seen 1/2 the snow
acumulation Buffalo has seen, some 70 miles west of here.
This can make for quite a strain on any
automobile...sub zero cold starts,in air packed with moisture,
belts with an icy glaze on them...oh and then the
salt/slush bath in the wheelwels, and where ever else the
stuff finds its way too..
and how about
driving..well,my friend..quite dangerous ,but really only to those
who taunt the icy conditions...really... the course
of my monza's changed, but for the better, one fateful
january morning years back..there i was...in my black
monza 2+2,with a swaped in '68 307 chevy motor,4speed
and no posi,or decent tread on my tires for that
matter..blipping the throttle to send the tail into little side
slips that I could counter with my steering wheel, that
was until one blip over did it just a bit...and
swoosh...there i was sliding into oncomming traffic..hopeing for
a curb and getting a '64 chrysler New Yorker of all
cars (the only bigger chrysler was a '63 or a
'65,lol).. in an instant..i was watching my passenger side
rear glass, still held together by its tinting..sliding
up that long green hood....It all occured at
relatively low speed and everyone was ok..
But that was
a lesson in what goes and what dosent in a monza on
the icy roads..I shouldve known better.
On the
other hand ..today was just about as bad as anyother
winter day, yet in the culdesac where my work is located
I managed to get the ass end out sideways yet get
into the driveway with the tail swinging wide the
other way..then having her pendulum back again, all the
while controlling her actual motion with the gas and
brake ,and I effortlessly driffted into the exact
,front row center parkings spot I wanted(the lot was
still mostly clear) All to the amazement of my other
early coworkers and without spilling a drop of the
coffee I had in a gas staion 'to-go' cup.
That I of
course was holding in my hand (would someone please
invent a coffee mug holder for the monza console?)Maybe
I'll never learn..lol

All headlights
working,
4 tires with equal tread
Fasten your
safetybelt,
and drive with your head!

Marco
P.S.
I think with this I'll start a column on this page
called "Misc. Ramblings..."

hey marco, how about chains/cablechains? out here
in calif we are required to put on chains past a
certain point up in the sierras when there is enough on
the road to warrant it. i see all these people on the
weather channel sliding all over the place on the hwys
out there and i ask myself--why don't these use
chains? tom c. ---too lazy to use the caps

I commend you guys who drive a monza in the snow
(or even rain). I remember when I used to drive mine
regularly (1975-1978) that it was pretty squirlly to say
the least. Especially with a manual trans I had to be
real careful not to get sideways even with snow tires.
While my car now practically never sees any inclement
weather I did get caught in a snow/ice storm coming home
from my last car show (Chevy/Vettefest) this past
March. I had to drive home on the expressway and I
haven't been that nervous in a long time. I was real
careful and thank goodness I made it home ok but I would
not want to drive like that everyday. As far as
chains go, I haven't seen anybody use them for probably
25 years. I'm not positive but I think they were
outlawed, I know that studded snow tires were outlawed
many, many years ago and I think chains were too, they
were too tough on the roads. Clyde

Yep, thanks clyde...There are no signs of it even
letting up anytime soon.
A look out my window this
morning reveals another inch or so of fresh snow.

What keeps me ok is, that the monza I'll drive
today..the silver one, Is a V6 car.
Its pretty balanced
in weight,and tourqe output,compared to a V8 car, so
that makes a big difference.
Also on days like
these I can take city/urban streets on the 11 mile trek
to work.
On these roads, between the lights and
other traffic, It'd be difficult to top 40 mph. So at
35 and under., giving myself reasonable stopping
distance..the drive really isnt that bad. knock on
wood,lol.
This is even without snow tires, but the tires do
have nearly new tread.
Marco
