i wasnt trying to be a prick, but some of these
people on ebay and trader online are on crack.
i
appraise vintage cars as a sideline,1955-80.
so i know
a little about market value.example, guy on
trader-online has a 77 vega wagon with 500 orig miles,a dealer
kept it hidden al these years.he put a 350 in it,prof
job, anyway,he wants 9900 firm for this car!!!! you gotta be
kidding me
another guy in i think calif wants 8400 for
his 75 towne coupe thats needs work, and yet another
ad in hemmings a year ago listed a 78 monza spyder
with 23 orig miles,00023,not 23k,for
$26,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i just think alot of these people take some good
drugs.being an appraiser,i can tell you there is a vast
difference between ACTUAL MARKET VALUE and the value the car
represents to YOU the owner.example:i have a '75
monza,factory 350 car,factory 4speed,factory no a/c.not only
that it is a "k" code monza,(fact 4v).to me its value
is priceless,it could never be replaced, ever.but on
the open market,it wouldnt fetch more than
$2800,tops.and its a rust free arizona car,has never seen rain
or snow or salt,so unless i found the one guy in the
world who is into monzas and has deep pockets and
really wants my car,its only going to fetch
2800,period.end of story.most people get pissed when i tell them
what there vehicles are ACTUALLY worth because there
vehicle has sentimental value and thats cool,i
understand.
my car does to but come on,9900 firm for a vega
wagon??? is this guy serious???????
just my 2 cents

I will be the first to admit that I have a
difficult time assesing the value of a old car. But I
suppose what comes to my mind when looking at these old
cars is this, what type of "normal" car would you get
off a dealers lot for let's say $7000-$8000? Nothing
really that great, so when you compare this "nothing so
great" car to a much older car that is in really good
condition, maybe modified with a better engine, drivetrain,
paint etc. or maybe even stock, which car would you
really rather have and spend the same amount of money
on? I realize that Monza's and other H bodies aren't
considered collector cars but is $7000 or $8000 really that
much? I will agree that none of these cars are worth
$26000 no matter how good, but a real excellent example
under $10,000, well maybe. I have a 75 Monza 2+2 which
is a modified showcar that I drive maybe 1000 miles
a year just to shows, no where else, and have it
insured for $10,000. Is it worth $10,000? I don't know,
but if you park it next to a "normal" $10,000 car I
think it would fare pretty well. I realize that a cars
value is determined by supply and demand and let's face
it , demand for any H body is not that big but in
this day and age paying less than $10,000 for a car is
not that big of a deal. Clyde

hey clyde.you make a good point.my monza is worth
alot to me,even though it looks like i will have to
sell it soon, sadly.i deal with car dealers, new and
vintage.and sadly almost 99.9 percent wont even buy a h-body
even for 100$.the MYSTERY is that i dont know why??? i
geuss at the time the were perceived as
cheap, econoboxes, just a big brother to the chevette(what my boss
says)
actually,i had a chevette,it was a damn good car.
so in
OUR community, that is to say the people out there who
love h-bodies,our cars have a different value.but to
the uninformed public,its a diff story.also something
you might think of is the europeans.older american
cars in good shape bring huge money.the only prob is
getting it over there.
dont take it to the UK,take it
to germany,denmark,france,holland,belgium,maybe
spain
they go nuts over american cars.my brother got 19,000
marks for his piece of shit 71 firebird in germany.he
was stationed there so it got a free ride.imagine a
71 firebird,350,2barrel,auto,ugly green,bizzilion
miles on it sold for $11,000 u.s.
as of right
now,the most valueble hbody is no doubt a mirage.the
local muscle car dealer here in town said the only
monza he would ever buy would be a mirage with a V8 and
4speed,dont ask me why.

Hey Tony, What do you think my Mirage would be worth? Go to www.monzamirage.com and look at Ron Lee's Mirage. (16,700 miles, all original)

Thanks, Ron

PS: It is NOT for sale:-)

ok,here goes.hard to value a car without seeing
it in person and spending about an hour judgeing
it.i went to monzamirage.com.so lets assume your
mirage looks like the one in the pic on the your
homepage.assuming its showroom cond and hasnt been hacked on or
parts removed, with 16k,id say youre mirage would be
worth in the neighborhood of
20,000 if you sold it
in europe or to the japanese, and if its a
4speed.ok,in the u.s.,id say it might bring 12,000.if it were
mine and i needed to sell it,id find a museum to buy
it,but museums are a tuff sell,it has to be spotless in
every way,a true 100 point car.so if yours is,id say a
museum,in the u.s. would pay 15,000 for your car,and thats
about top dollar.the europeans value manual shift
sports cars alot more than americans do.so if its an
automatic, its not going to bring 20k on the euro
market.marco,as for your car,id need more info, alot more info to
make a sound decision on value, but lets say its the
one in the pic on this club, clean, red, spyder, all
orig, low miles.on the open market,it wouldnt bring as much
as youd like probablly.but to a closed market, that
is to say marketed only to monza enthusiasts,it
would bring alot more assuming one of us has the
money.any car is only worth what the market is willing to
pay.i advertised my '75 2+2 rust free california 350
car on the web at 3500$ and havent had the first
interested party call.so id say that in munich or brussells
or paris,it would be worth prob about 7,000 u.s..you
would be hard pressed to get half that in this
country, even though to me its a nice ride id love to have even
at 10k.just my 2scents

Thanks Tony. My Mirage is EXACTLY like the
pictures. It is all original, never been apart or modified
in any way. The dealer I bought the car from (14
years ago) took the hood/top/hatch stripes off of it
when the original owner traded it in on a new truck:-(
The tires that are on my Mirage are the replacements
that the dealer put on it when the firestone 500's
were recalled.(The original owner told me this) Other
than the filters and battery it is completely
original. I'm not sure what a 100 point car is, but I don't
think mine is one. There is some paint flaking on the
engine and the paint on some of the flairs is starting
to show its age, but it still shines:-) But NOTHING
has been redone or repainted.

Thanks
again

Ron

actually,100 point cars are exceptionally rare.i
have been to 100's of car shows, seen alot of beautiful
cars of all types and makes, and have appraised over a
1000 cars.maybe,maybe 5 or 6 of them were genuine 100
cars.it would have to be a:
a car that at the point of
manufacture was hermedically sealed in dessicant and never
exposed to sunlight,driven,fueled,never had a
battery, etc.or b:one that has had a frame off resto with all the
correct parts and knowhow to reassemble it.in my life i
have seen one 100 point hbody,it was a vega with
000006 miles on it
i think it was a spirit of america
car if i remember right. a dealer in iowa had it and
never offered it for public sale,it went from the
transport from GM to this guys garage or barn or whatever
and stayed there all these years.he was smart,he took
out the battery, and let it idle when new to run all
the gas out of it,then it went into dry storage.i see
these cars occasionally.dealers will keep a grand
national or vette or some low production car for
themselves for years on end, eventually they get sold but go
for astronomical money.i know of a japanese buyer who
paid over$100,000 for a 1988 buick GNX with 00004
miles on it.so your car is not 100 points, who cares, its
a very nice car!!!!!
you dont want to sell it
anyway, and besides,it only has to make YOU happy.my car is
banged up,scrathched, but its a ball to drive!!!!!!
