hi my name is dave, i'm from new brunswick canada
and am wondering if anybody out there can help me
find some tires for the back of my 1980 spider. i am
trying to keep the original rally rims on and am having
a hell of a time finding tires. apparently the size
i am looking for is not manufactured by bf goodrich
any more (215/60-r13)
my fronts still are
(205/60-r13). need the tires to be newer style t/a's to match
fronts. have had the car 17yrs and is still pretty close
to original except for the almost 300hp 3.8L under
the hood.

thx later

Hey Dave:

Just went through the same
thing. A three month search and the only 215 tire I
found were for Rally racing. Only T/A makes a 205/60R13
and Eldorado makes a 205/70R13. I went with the
205/70R13 Eldorados on the rear to fill out the wheel
wheels. Its an alright looking tire and the price was
good. I've got a full set of T/A's if I want to switch
back.
Most guys go with T/A's 195/60 on front and 205/60 on
the rear. I just find that they leave to much wheel
well open.
Paul

G'Day Dave
Welcome to the club Dave. I hear
you on the tires dilema, noone makes the "proper"
size tires for the Monza anymore. I've been told that
185 or 195 70R13's are the closest to stock you can
get with the Monza. I went out and got Predator GTS
radials from Canadian tire, size P185/70R13 and they fit
the rims perfectly and fill out the wheel whell quite
nicely. I have those tires on both my 80 Spyders. They
also have the raised white lettering that the stock
Spyders came with.
By the way, I'm rebuilding my 231
V6 and your near 300HP V6 sounds very intriguing.
What have you done to it to get soo much HP with it?
Any pics?
Cya
Bryan

hey how ya doing, thought about going to 70's but
used to have them and got little to no traction. 60'
are required for a minimum. as far as pics i have got
quite a few. got them made cause i was looking to sell
(still am if the price was right)in order to start a new
project (had this one a longggggg time.drop me your email
and i can send you some of the pics if you like. as
far as the motor is concerned, what i haven't done
would be more like it. to start with it is not the
stock block. it is of the 81-83 turbo vintage, giving
much bigger intake and exhaust ports and a steel
crank, trw flat top forged pistons (10.81:1) with my
heads at 44cc, steel head gaskets, 625cfm carter comp
series carb, stainless swirl tipe valves, double valve
springs, high vol oil pump, edlebrock highrise intake,
very low profile kn power filter(to clear hood
unmodified), cam if i can remember(it been 5yrs since i built
it)approx 496 lift and 220dur at 5000rpm and 300 dur at
6000 it just fit, 3 core rad built custon stainless
shoud for fan, high voltage coil, total seal piston
rings, torque plated the block(using 350 buick torque
plate, imagine that) cc'd the heads and weighed all my
pistons prior to assemmbly to get the best match for
weight acrossed all cyl(to counter the roughness of the
buick platform), apr connecting rod bolts. open headers
and full 2 1/4" dual with red devils at the back ( a
little too noisey for my daughter so am going to change
as soon as it breaks. the only up grades i would
done from here would be to put in purple rods and
roller rockers instead of stock and a fluid damper and
an a mallory distributor. the motor is good to about
6500 rpm as it stands now but would be capable of
7500+ with the up grades. kids have slowed that
process. am running original 4 speed and rear end as well.
the car and motor are only good to 300 hp anyways. oh
yea have braced the engine compartment in six places
to take the stress. and had to tie the motor down.
can't find poly engine mounts around here for a v6, the
factory are only good to 120hp. believe me they tourque
when i come after it. got about 4500 in the motor and
about 14000 in the car at this point. got to go pick
the wife up take to ya later

I like using 205/60s all the way around.
They
really make a difference in handling, thats for
sure.
The problem is, the sidewalls are a bit to short, for
good ride quality and too avoid bottoming out.
A
215/60 Ive always thought would be a perfect tire size
for the 13 inch wheels.
I have also looked for
them with no luck.
If I remember right someone did
make that size in the late 70's early 80s.

yea i've tried 195/60 and 205/60 all the way
around as well. the 215s on the back help to keep the
rpms down with my 4 speed. i am in the process of
tracking down after market producers of discontinued
tires. when i find them i try and let every body know.
as far as bottoming out i have solved that problem
quite well and been able to cut the suspenion by almost
3". she rides rough but man does it handle well with
the low center of gravity. basically all i did was
put poly bushing on all the front control arms (a
little sqeaky)and replaced front sway bar poly bushings
with new poly(all purchased from energy suspension),
used air conditioning coils in the front with about 1
1/2 coils cut out and kyb racing shocks (really work
great) (cross member is about 3" from the ground, its
hell to try to jack up), in the back i used cargo
coils with about 2 1/2 coils cut out and stock monroe
shocks. had to make up some safety cables for the back
until i find shorter shocks. cutting the coils in the
back made them too short to stay in if the suspension
were to drop fully but to safety cables have been a
great fix for that. drop me some pics if you have them
scorleo@nbnet.nb.ca.
